On the first chilly evening we have had for a long time, 5 runners left shaw lane to run the 0.5km to the YMCA Allotment!
Tonight we welcomed a new runner Rachael to the group (woop woop!), show her some support here We were also joined (eventually) by Sheffield GGer James, and regulars Sharon and Mairead !
After our short but sweet run around the corner to the YMCA Allotment, we were met by Dawn, who volunteers to run the space. The allotment is part of a greener communities project to create beautiful spaces and encourage people to get into gardening and growing their own food. Since the last time we visited in October 2017, the allotment has been transformed into an amazing, peaceful space! Dawn explained how they had had help this year from Prince's Trust and Fruitful communities, to help build raised beds and plant fruit trees.
We got to work on the long list of jobs Dawn had for us, the finishing touches to an already beautiful garden! Rachael & Mairead grabbed paint brushes and began staining the fence a lovely shade of brown, whilst Sharon, chief weeder, armed with a trowel, set to work on some of the ginormous weeds! James eventually arrived, after getting lost in the unfamiliar streets of Barnsley and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the poly-tunnel, where Dawn needed the tomatoes carefully tying to poles!
Time flies when you're having fun, and we were finished in no time! Dawn was very grateful for all of our help and we vowed to return to finish the job! On the run back we added a sprint finish in to make sure we'd got our heart-rates up, stretched the appropriate arm/back muscles and said our goodbyes! Great work team!
