After warming up outside the Tap Tavern, Jack and Sam led 8 runners on a wet Valentines Day 2.7km uphill run to meet Ken at Petersham Common to help the Petersham Common Conservators. The order of the day was to plant ferns and sedges on top of a newly created sump that helps store rainwater from the roads from Richmond Park releasing it back onto the Common slowly and preventing flooding of the adjacent Star and Garter Building. There were 3 different plants being put in heavy wet muddy clay. These were hart tongue ferns, pendulous sedges and deer ferns. These are all native plants that will grow well in the wet conditions and improve the ecology of the Common. We were tasked with planting 126 in total and with our hart work, sedgeous efforts and quick as a deer spade work we finished in no time to be treated to some Valentine chocolates as we scraped the mud from our shoes and repeated a similar run back down the hill to Richmond with heavy muddy trainers.
