GoodGym hit litter for six at Almondbury Cricket Club

Whilst GoodGym Huddersfield didn't run up any mountains last night (although there was a fairly significant hill) we certainly collected a mountain of rubbish from around Almondbury Cricket Club.

A team of 6 GoodGymmers left the Stadium on another lovely October evening for the ascent of Somerset Road and Almondbury Bank. It was good to have first time GoodGymmer Chrissy Sunderland running, along with Kati Law back for her second GoodGym run too. Also running of course were Louise Galvin, Chris Green and Ben Godfrey all of whom are 100% attenders, having taken part in every GoodGym Huddersfield run so far.

Additionally it was great to also have the support of local councillors on the job once again, Bernard McGuin and Alison Munro both met us at the cricket club ready to pitch in with the task.

And what a task it was, over the years all manner of litter and other junk has accumulated around the ground's perimeter, which now badly needed shifting. So headtorches on and gloves donned GoodGym got stuck in to remove the rubbish. Cans, bottles, crisp packets, bags of dog poo (ugh!-why do people do that???), a child's bike and even what looked like an ancient mattress were all rapidly removed from the undergrowth surrounding the ground. The speed at which we were filling the bin bags surprised even me and I had to run back to the club pavillion to collect additional supplies.

Forty-five minutes, a whole lot of fun and the odd nettle sting later, we had filled a total of 15 bags which were taken back to the clubhouse to be disposed of. Following the obligatory photographs, posing with our mountain of refuse, we headed back down Somerset Road enjoying the payback of our climb earlier in the evening.

It was a shame it was so dark by the time we finished that we couldn't see the fruits of our litter picking efforts. But I hope that the dog walkers, school kids and local residents will appreciate our work as they pass by this morning, and maybe just wonder who the fairies were who called in the night to blitz the litter.
