Today's community mission was our first in a new park for GoodGym Newcastle, today we were in Iris Brickfield Park in Heaton
The job of the day was to tidy up the cherry trees around the edge of the park. The cherry trees had already been flayed which had left lots of spiky bits at eye level so Andrew, Amy Brew, Katie, and myself got to work hacking back the cherry trees. Amy Baker and José were hard at work litter picking and soon had two bin bags full!
We got a lot of great praise for members of the public for our work today, one woman even helped us out litterpicking as she walked her dog around the park. Got a lot of hellos from all the lovely dogs in the park today too, maybe it was because our lovely cuddles or maybe it was because we were making piles of sticks... who knows?
Tom and Sam joined us too after circling around the park to find an entrance and got stuck into the cutting back the trees and litterpicking.
Soon it was time for our celebrated tea break but quickly we were back to it with Amy Baker and José having a go hacking back the nettles near the trees.
Time really flew by on this task and was great to see so many of us out on a saturday morning helping out our community. Also great to get to cuddle all the dogs..
There’s a greener side to our city. A vibrant, more open side. It should be celebrated, Nurtured, Enjoyed by everyone. Our allotments and parks are the lungs of our city. We’re here to breathe new life into them. We are Urban Green Newcastle.
