It was a wet, dark and cold October morning in Newcastle but three hardcore goodgymers braved the rain to help out in Newcastle’s parks. Mike, the task owner, promised digging holes would help warm us up. We were very cold so thought we might as well try it.

Our job today was to replace missing parts of the fence at the border of the park. But first we used a crowbar to get the nails out of an old bit of fence. I found this quite exciting using a crowbar for the first time outside of a video game!

We dug a hole to put in a new fence post, this was quite a difficult task as a soon as we started digging, we hit a lot of old bricks, but it did warm us up! We got to use another new piece of equipment, a fencepost hole digger which looks like two spades joined together and is for pulling the soil out of the hole. We then measured and cut the wood to size and nailed the fence together.

We managed to fix the biggest two broken sections of fence. Me and Holly worked on one section and Andrew worked on a section further away. Andrew was very proud of his personal section of fence.

We worked through and then decided to leave a bit earlier rather than having a coffee break as we were drenched from the constant drizzle!

If you want to get involved in helping local parks we are volunteering at nunsmoors next Saturday we helping out in St Lawernce park and City Stadium (Heaton Bowl) in three weeks.
