About this session

Welcome to GoodGym Newcastle

We're a friendly and social group that combines exercise with helping out local charities and community groups. Every Monday evening we meet to get active and do a physical task to make a difference in the Newcastle area. The GoodGym motto is 'Do Good, Get Fit'.

This task on November 9th

We are visiting the Lighthouse Project in Byker. They need help maintaining their gardens and the areas surrounding their building. There are some pathways in a small woodland area that need weeding and bark placed. Some overgrown shrubbery needs cutting back and all the paths need to be swept with debris bagged.

We will have some gardening gloves, plus spotlights and various torches. Feel free to bring your own gloves and torches if you have them.

The running or cycling distance will be about 1.25 miles each way. There will also be a walking group available walking the direct route, which is 0.9 miles or 1.45km each way.

Where we meet

We’ll be meeting at Stepney Bank Stables, NE1 2NP. There’ll be GoodGymers in the reception area, look out for the red or black GoodGym t-shirts if you are new! Stepney Bank Stables has a free car park if you are driving there, but walking, running, cycling or using public transport is recommended.

At Stepney Bank Stables you can leave bags and valuables in the staff room, which is able to be locked and is secure. We also have access to the toilet facilities in the building.

Participating at GoodGym Newcastle

GoodGym is for absolutely everyone aged 18 and above. We welcome runners of all abilities, including absolute beginners or those returning from injury. Unless otherwise stated, there will be a walking option at Monday group runs. Occasionally we will be visiting somewhere further afield, when running, cycling or meeting at the location will be the only realistic options. The listing on our website will clearly state this.

There will always be a back marker and/or walk leader on every run or walk to a task, so nobody will ever get left behind - no matter what your pace is.

This task supports
The Lighthouse Project
An inspiring youth and community space in the heart of Byker.

We provide a safe and welcoming space where young people and the community can flourish and live life to its fullest. We partner and work with organisations that support young people and the community. We are a place at the heart of the community where young people’s voices can be heard and provide a forum for such conversations. We help to reduce poverty and deprivation in the area.

Make sure you've read our general guidelines for safety for taking part in a GoodGym session.

This is a GoodGym group run, with the option of walking too. You'll meet other GoodGymers at the start location and run or walk to the task together. If you're worried about any aspect of the session, contact your area activator Richard by email at richardborrowdale@goodgym.org.
