Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
This week’s run started off with a gentle jog to the Dalston Curve Garden where once again the team worked to tackle the huge mound of compost at the back gate. We were met by our hosts who asked if we could clear a section of it so that a vehicle could get through and to bag it up so that it was available of the public to collect.
We split into 3 pairs and worked hard for 40 minutes using the spades and bags provided, taking turns to shovel and bag the compost. It was hard work but we got stuck in and cleared a really good amount in the time, filling more than 20 bags and stacking them up for local residents to collect. Once all the bags were full, we spent the last 10 minutes energetically shovelling as much compost out of the way of the gate as we could. It was satisfying to see how much of a difference we'd made. When we'd finished the task, our grateful hosts had laid out some refreshments for us which were very well received!
Meanwhile, Kate and Phil took on a mission in the very north of the borough. A three-and-a-bit mile run up through Stoke Newington got them to the destination - a lady's back garden that was entirely grown over with weeds. Thirty minutes later, they'd not de-weeded the entire thing but made a decent start - clearing a patio area so the lady who lived there could sit outside again. Special props to Kate for making short work of some ten foot long creepers! Then it was time to head off into the summer night again, enjoying the run down hill back to London Fields, though sadly thanks to the substantial distance undertaken, not in time to join the rest of the group who finished the evening with some interval sprints and a combination of exercises and jogging in the park before warming down with some good yoga stretches and heading back to base.
