Hills, Mill, Drills and Thrills

Waltham Forest Report written by Ant Withstandley

Maybe it was Jo's talk of the Dutch Masters recently seen on a trip to Bruges before we set off, but the GoodGym Waltham Forest crew got their Rembrandt on big time today. Our mission was some interior decorating at The Mill, a magical community centre down the other end of the High Street.

Great to see GG tourist Ernesto (moonlighting from Islington) who was accompanied by the first timer and painting expert, Chloe. No time was wasted in getting to the destination after our usual conference, headcount and review of upcoming holidays we made a beeline for The Mill. On arrival brushes and rollers were distributed, masking tape was fastened, dustsheets were laid down and the paint was applied. The Mill's main meeting room began to gleam like Meghan Markle's teeth.

While the main body of our crew beavered away in the meeting room, we also had Ercole and Katie sanding, cleaning and painting blackboards and Jennie 'Rothko' Matuszek supported by Ramon who both did a fantastic job on the door frame of the errm latrine. Transforming the off-white woodwork into an intense shade of Dutch Orange!

All in all, I think these GoodGym artisans have paid a fitting tribute to the borough of culture with a fantastic bit of painting decorating.

But, the story doesn't end there. The precision of the painting was matched only by the speed the task was accomplished so we had time to kill, which meant time to drill. We headed south to the Douglas Eyre Sports Ground for x6 100 metre sprints with various routines (grape-vining, skipping, fast feet) on the returns.

With heart rates hitting the heights, we finally headed back (uphill) to Mirth, Marvel and Maud for merriment.

Can't believe how fast that room was painted! I'm hurting today after the drills but it's a good ache!

Good Deeds Removing Weeds

Waltham Forest Report written by Ant Withstandley

Superman II, The Bourne Supremacy, Spider-Man 2, Hostel: Part II, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Before Midnight, The Dark Knight, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

According to THE INTERNET, these are just a few examples of sequels that were better than the originals. Now, I wouldn’t make such a grand claim about last night’s WFGG run to George Mason Lodge (GML), but it was at least as good as it’s predecessor.

The excitement started early when Ama spotted the bewildered Run Trainer (yours truly!) scratching my head outside of the destination as I somewhat haplessly tried to suss out a quieter route from our Mirth, Marvel and Maud (MM&M) base to the destination. Luckily the resourceful Ama had drawn a map and we headed to the base along the relatively quiet and pollution free residential streets of Walthamstow.

Safely arriving at MM&M for the start of the session, it was great to see our eleven strong crew and to welcome new GoodGymers Kerri and Katie. It was easy to spot anyone who hadn’t come along last week as they were not wearing long trousers! Sorry guys, my bad; next time I will mention the nettles!

After the pretask briefing and kudos to the weekend half and full marathon exploits of Pippa, Raymond, Francis and Ercole we hit the tarmac with someone or other leading the way and arrived 2-miles and 18-minutes later at GML.

Our now battle-hardened gardeners started pulling up weeds faster than a toupee in a hurricane under the watchful eye of Mohammed, a charismatic and multi-lingual GML resident who had written over 100 books.

40 minutes later with the GML garden looking resplendent and the nod of approval from Mohammed we headed back to base for a cool-down stretch and a general feeling of warmth and happiness.

Be you a regular, new, lapsed or a few, please join us next Wednesday for another fantastic task when will be painting part of The Mill.
