Even A Used Mankini Has A value

Saturday 22nd February 2020

Written by Matthew

The lovely Sara at Claire House Hospice arranged a Super Sorting Saturday for their sorting centre and the intrepid Sophie, Emma, Sam and Matthew from Good Gym joined other volunteers to help sort scores of donation bags, ranging from some really high quality donations to what can only be described as people's rubbish. The great news is that even the worst of the clothing donations has a value as rag and so it was up to us to sort the items into rag, discount and high end goods as well as sorting through bric-a-brac. The first "find" of the day was a mankini, which let's just say had seen better days. So, it was not all plain sailing but to think that we are helping to raise funds through the selling of these items in order to fund a nurse, who will look after a dying child, puts it all into perspective and makes what we did so worthwhile. Many bags sorted later and it was job done but there are always more bags to sort so if you ever want to volunteer for them then Sara would be more than happy to see you and put the kettle on.

Not what are the chances of that? (Read below for the answer)

Friday 24th January 2020

Pauline and Matthew spent a second week at Claire House Hospice helping to sort out donations for their shops. Now old (less of the old please Matthew, says Pauline) hands at this it was easier to sort through more of the items. It is quite addictive having so much to sort through and we spent a happy few hours with the wonderful Sara the donation centre manager, who always starts a shift with a cuppa. There are plans to do another session this coming Friday and then help on the SUPER SORTING SATURDAY ON THE 22ND FEBRUARY.

And would you believe Pauline found a shirt with "Harrison-Field" in the label, which is our surnames. Now, WHAT ARE the chances of that?

We sorted everything but Hogwart's sorting hat

Friday 17th January 2020

Written by Matthew

Two Good Gymers from Liverpool went to the Claire House Hospice sorting warehouse to help sort through a seemingly endless number of bags of donated items from clothes to shoes, to bric-a-brac, to general rubbish. It was hard at first to take all of the rules on board but Pauline and Matthew were soon in their stride, aided by Sara from the charity, who was amazing to be around and a real inspiration, as were all the other volunteers there.

We managed to sort through a whole skip full of items and it was amazing to see what the public have donated. Even the clothes, which were dirty have a value as they are bagged and recycled. It was a really fulfilling way to spend a morning, knowing that we are helping to raise funds for the charity, which will help families who have a child with a life limiting illness.

#GGSuperSaturday - What a difference a day makes

#GGSuperSaturday, celebrating 10 years of GoodGym

Twenty four little hours and we would have been standing in the pouring rain. As it was fifteen intrepid GoodGymers helped to make sure none of the runners at the Clare House Hospice Splash Dash got lost on what was a beautifully sunny day. The charity raises money to run a hospice and other services for children with life limiting illnesses and their families.

With 1,500 runners and walkers it made for a magical time. The 5km event was not a serious run for most of the participants. Loads of children took part with their families and basically got covered in different coloured paints on the way round. Sadly this is going to be the last Clare House Hospice Splash Dash but something else is planned for next year so hopefully GoodGym will be able to help out.
