Loughborough Park Educational Garden Part 2 - Tuesday's Group Run !!

The team at Urban Canopy are helping out Friends of Loughborough Park throughout May to create a new educational garden within the park. http://www.urbancanopy.org/
The space that we are due to work needs a lot of weeds and old plants removed, but it also has a lot of mature trees, which means we are restricted in terms of the tools we are able to use, so there's a lot of work to do!
Tonight is part 2 of a big task which we will complete over two weeks on our Group Runs.
Get signed up and watch the space take shape from start to finish!

The EduSpace Race !!
Oh what a night, late May back in 2022.... This was a really fun one and a task where our GoodGymers could really get their teeth into, let's see what we got up to.
By 6:30pm the sun was still shining and it was a balmy 22 degrees - summer vibes indeed! I had bumped into Maya one of our GGers on the train earlier who informed me that the weather forecast had changed from 50% chance of rain at 8pm to 90% which simply wouldn't do. ☔ 🌂
Unbeknownst to the runners the AA formulated the warm up into an anti-rain dance, weaving intricate patterns and side steps which were almost perfectly observed by all the runners. The result of course is that not only did the rain rain stay away but it's not coming again until Thursday!! ⚡
This week's category was airlines (favourite, least favourite, simply name any) and we should send a special shout out to Wizz Air for taking care of our Lindy once when she was 'not very well' on one of their flights.
It was a short run to Loughborough Park 1.35 kms each way but that meant lots of time for the task. We were helping out Stephen and Bill from Urban Canopy who are working with the Friends of LP to create an educational garden where there once was a Japanese gravel garden (possibly back in feudal times as now all that was there were lots of weeds)!
Lydia, India (a GGer herself) and the volunteers from Friends of LP were all there so we could get stuck in together with a strangely satisfying weeds clearance task. Stephen explained that the plan is to clear away as much as possible to be able to plan out exactll where and what to plant and create a self-nourishing forest floor garden with each different planted item working in harmony with those around it. ✅✅
We had a solid 45 minutes to attack the pathways and managed to clear a decent chunk of weeds however by the end looking around it was clear there is still so much to be done. Not a problem though, the team will be down there this week and next to continue the work and we will be back next Tuesday to pick up wherever they have got to and take it forward. We are very excited to see what lays in store at the end of it all! 😍
Check out the photos, we managed to add a little to the huge pile Shauna generated all by herself..... 💪
Thanks to the team at Friends of LP, their volunteers and of course Stephen and Bill for having us and Sarah for being back marker for the evening.

Thorlands Gardens Task - Tuesday's Group Run !!

We have a Lambeth x Southwark crossover event this week! Led by Southwark Super Sam or SSS as we like to call him, Lambeth community will head over to help out Simon at a classic Southwark GG site.
Thor Lands Community Gardens in Camberwell offers a range of tasks for us to get involved with! There is an on-going project to convert this half an acre site into a thriving garden for the residents and locals to love.
This week we have a soil & compost delivery to move as well as plenty of chopping & clearing to do in the Forest Food Garden.
We meet at Papa's and will head out to the borderlands where we hope to be welcomed by the wildlings over the line in Southwark! ;0)
Health and Safety first: Please be advised that the task owner, Simon, cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons and would like us to be considerate, keep social distancing from him and to stay home if you develop a constant sneeze or cough.

Andrea had sad news for us last night in the fact that GROAD would no longer be able to use the premises at the Naked Hare for their collections - as their business is expanding the space in the back will no longer be available.
This left us with a sad choice where we could only clear out GROAD's things rather than the grand plan of making the area a lovely oasis for people dropping off donations and a comfy shelter for Brixton's stray cats (more on these guys later).
That didn't take away from the enjoyment of a good run out in the daylight from Papa's looping round Clapham North and on to Acre Lane where the friendly staff of the Naked Hare were waiting for us to let us in. 😀
The task that was left was to clear out the donations which were being stored in the conservatory and to do a clear up of the alleyway as a thank you to the team for having hosted GROAD for the time they had. It was spades, shovels, brooms and bags at the ready and the task was complete in no time! 🧤 🚮
We had a couple of visitors during the task to keep an eye on how we were getting on, one particularly handsome feline (pictured) took a shine to Tilly and they carried on a friendly exchange throughout.
As we headed back the group discussed upcoming GoodGym matters including the reinvigoration of our social media strategy (thanks Effie and Charlotte) and upcoming missions. Check out the homepage for more details.

Acre Lane Clear Up - Tuesday’s Group Run !!

Sign up and join the Lambeth community on the weekly Tuesday night run. 💯
The task for tonight is to clear up the side area of NAKED HARE where we have our Brixton collections for GROAD.
Currently it has overgrown weeds, rubble and waste & we want to make the area more presentable with plants & flower planters. There’s even an area they look after homeless cats! ⛄
A classic clear up and sprucing task for us and one of our most beloved partners.

Summer Social Rounders: Clapham Common (Home game) - North vs. South of the River

What's the best way to get GoodGymers from across London together over the summer?
Organise a social in the park with (hopefully) the glorious British summer sunshine and an added element of a nostalgic game of rounders.
Of course, there's always some sort of competition, but in a fun environment. Come along to meet other GG members from across London for a picnic and a social rounders game between GG members from north of the river against GG members south of the river (we're not strict about this and if one team need more players, we can "loan" them for the afternoon PLUS don't forget we may have non-GG friends).
We know everyone cannot make this date due to other commitments or location, so there will be a second social rounders on Saturday 16th of July in Victoria Park. Consider this the "Home" game and that second social date, the "Away" game. Sign up to both, if you can make it!
TLDR
- What: Social Rounders (with picnic, BYOB and invite your non-GG mates)
- Where: Clapham Common (exact spot to be determined)
- When: Saturday 18th of June from 16:00 onwards
- Why: Enjoy an afternoon in the park, play social rounders, eat, drink, meet GoodGymers from other areas and possibly get a sun tan (not promising anything). Importantly, have fun!
Don't know how to play?
Firstly, we welcome all! Just because there's a "North vs. South of the river" narrative, it's all for fun...no one is winning any medals or prizes. If you haven't played before, not to worry, the majority of us have forgotten the rules, so all will be explained on the day. In summary: it's a no-fuss version of Baseball.
Can I still come if I can't make the start?
Have other commitments earlier or like to be fashionably late? That's fine. It's all social, so come and go as you please! We might start off with a practice hit around before our "socially competitive" game. If the rounders is all over by the time you arrive, just come and chill with a picnic. I'm sure a few of us will stay until the sun starts to set.
Hope to see you there!
If you have any questions, please put it down in the "Discussion" below and I'll get to you ASAP. Otherwise, you can email me at samuel@goodgym.org.

Can you dig it?

This week we have a two part task to get our teeth into! 🌷 🌻 🌹 🌼
We are helping out Lambeth Council improve the area for the local community at the top of Brixton Hill 🌈
Part 1 We will be digging the soil out of a large raised bed so that a wildlife protective mesh can be installed, and then planted to make the area clean and vibrant. This is for our group runners as part of our normal Tuesday evening session. ⛏
Part 2 We will be back tomorrow with a Community Mission to shovel all the soil back on top of the bed to finish things off!
Sign and let's get our hands dirty!!

Break it Down
Light nights in Lambeth town - it's Tuesday's Group run in Spring time !!
10 runners gathered at Papa's, our base in Brixton, for tonight's task and we were greeted with families and their children playing in the playground! Now that it is still light out it has a completely different feel heading out to evening tasks so we are looking forward to slightly higher temperatures to go with it.
Before the warm up we found out that tonight's group had quite eclectic tastes in cuisine with favourites including East Asian fare from Thailand, Korea & Japan, South Asian from India and environs, African from Ethiopia/Eritrea (an AA fave), Middle Eastern - Kurdish and European in the form of Italian. Sorry France you weren't invited....
It is a short run down to the Grantham Road surgery to meet Jonathan so we arrived early but luckily Maya had invited Liz a newbie GGer who happens to be a physical trainer. 8 agonising minutes later we were questioning our life choices but were certainly a bit fitter after calisthenics in the Car Park! (Thanks Liz!)
Jonathan took us round to Swan Mews where we were greeted by several huge platers and the task was to empty one of its' soil into a one tonne bag (filled + a wheelbarrow extra for good measure) and break apart an older planter to be recycled (challenge gleefully accepted with no tools - and a decent job done). Check out the pics and please note that Shauna did actually have a bit of help ;0)
Back to Papa's with us then and warm down time which saw a couple of local children also join in the fun!
Thanks to all!!

Shifting Soil @ Swan Mews Garden - Tuesday’s Group Run !!

Sign up to join the Lambeth Community on the legendary Tuesday Group Run 😊
This week we head over to help the Lambeth GP Food Coop @ Swan Mews Garden in Stockwell. The garden is used by patients from Grantham surgery on Grantham Road but is situated a few minutes walk away in Stockwell opposite the tube.. It is used by patients and staff to learn how to grow vegetables and your help on Tuesday will enable us to create a wonderful environment for them. 💯
The job includes digging out soil from one or more planters and placing the soil into a large 1 tonne bag. There may be other smaller tasks for the group as well and we are definitely going to have fun while doing it ✅
If you have gardening gloves please bring them although we have several pairs if you don't and as this is a night task if you have a head torch please also bring that. 🧤
Join your fellow runners and make a difference locally while getting your fit on. 📢
