No Mossing Around

Tue 12 Oct
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Puns today courtesy of Michael 🙏

A great atmossphere

Dayum it gets dark so early now. Nevermind. The darkness wouldn’t put off our team of 12 wonderful GoodGymers!

Tonight’s task took us to Brixton Road Youth Centre where we met Sharron and Kathy who had a pretty mossy job for us...

The ground clearly gets pretty moist and lockdown had given the moss a chance to grow on a lot of the ground around the youth centre. Our job was to scrape it up with shovels and rakes and bag it up with as many leaves as possible. Michael also was given an extra job of trimming some trees back away from the path with some pretty funky secateurs. ✂️🌿

It was a tough challenge, with some nasty scraping noises and some seriously stubborn moss, but in the end we had a good 10 bags of leaves, moss and tree cuttings!

Blink and you’ll moss it

On the way back, we had a few pitstops for some lunges, press ups, tricep dips, wall-sits (X2) 😏 and a few quick squats before the traffic lights went green.

It moss be love.

Great stuff everyone!

Next week we’re helping out GROAD to sort some donations and pack some bags for rough sleepers - click here to sign up!

Raking leaves at Brixton Road Youth Centre

Tue 12 Oct 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
And bagging them up

The leaves have been falling again at Brixton Road Youth Centre, so we're going back for our regular job of sweeping them up and bagging them. Our record is about 30 bags - can we beat it!?

We then stick them on the kerbside so the council can take them and use them for compost! 👌

New to GG Lambeth? We're a super friendly group who meet at Papa's Park near Brixton Station at 7pm on Tuesdays. We run to a local organisation, do a physical task for them and run back by 8:30. You can leave things in Papa's Cafe where there's a loo too! Email me if you've got any questions??

Collecting and Sorting donations for Afghan Refugees

Sun 3 Oct

Get Rid Of And Donate (GROAD) do amazing work making use of unused STUFF donated to them by the public. We've previously helped them pack Christmas presents and toys for local kids and packed and distributed bags of essentials for rough sleepers.

They're expecting lots of donations so have asked for our help to sort items into categories. Members of the public book a slot to bring their stuff and our job is then to put the stock into the right place.

The task is at St Faith's Church Hall, near North Dulwich station which is up the road from Herne Hill station. There may not be a member of taskforce there, but the GROAD team are all very friendly 😊

Please bring a mask as the task will be inside 🤿

Sanding and painting benches at Hillside Gardens

Tue 5 Oct 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Providing quality seating at this lovely green space!

Hillside Gardens Park is a fab spot on the way to Streatham which has a great team of volunteers, but they've asked for a hand with sanding down some benches and painting on some wood preservative!

It'd be great if you can bring gardening gloves and head torch would be awesome too! 🧤💡🧤

It's about 3.5k each way and a bit of a hilly one 👌

Brixton Windmill? Big fan.

Tue 28 Sep
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Ain’t no threat of rain putting off tonight’s do-gooders! (Though the lure of baked goods might have tempted some out…)

We had a lovely bunch tonight, including many a friendly face and a few new ones! Shout out to Chris, Jen, Hannah and Alice for joining their first Lambeth group run! You are so welcome 👍👍

Tonight’s task was at the awesome (and slightly terrifying in such dark conditions - see ghostly pic) Brixton Windmill where we met Jean who gave us a few tasks to be cracking on with:

🌱 Raking up the mown grass for the compost heap

🔪 (closest relevant emoji?) Edging the path to make it look nice

✂️ Trimming back the hedges on the outside fence and putting the branches in a sack

Fake it till you rake it

Although the clumps of grass were a struggle to find and our lights didn’t quite light up the path as desired (according to Chris), in 30 minutes we were done. And we had 2 bags of grass and branches to show for it as well as a neatly edged pathway.

Great work gang! 💥

Cookies and crème de la crème

We then had a brisk run down the hill back to Papa’s. After a quick stretch, Jen brought out the goodies;

Chocolate chip cookies with a dash of salt. A phenomenal start to our Bake-Off Sweet-stakes!!

See you next week for sanding and painting benches at Hillside Gardens and (fingers-crossed) round 2 of bakes! 🍰

Gardening @ Brixton Windmill

Tue 28 Sep 19:00 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Getting the gardens in shape for a event they have the next day

We're going back to the Windmill! And they have an event on the day after we're visiting so hopefully we can get the park looking nice for new visitors.

There may be some tasks in the Windmill to do but we'll mostly be outside, planting and weeding etc!

Please bring a mask & gardening gloves 🧤🤿🧤

It's a short run but we'll have a longer option if people fancy it!

For Fox's Sake

Tue 21 Sep
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Tonight, 12 GoodGymers met on the streets of Brixton for two tasks ✌️

Two for Tuesdays 🍕🍕

We ran as one to Loughborough Farm, where most of the group met Emily who instructed in preparing the ground for an event they have coming up this weekend.

This involved levelling some soil and spreading a load of woodchip on the ground. There was also an interruption from a friendly fox. 10 points if you can spot it in the photos!

Group 2 were off to do some leafleting for the brand new Friends of Loughborough Park who have organised a monthly litter pick! We were spreading the word so other people can join to make the park look it’s best 👌

We blitzed a few roads near to the park and only got a little lost finding our way back to Loughborough Farm! 😬

We had a quick thigh-busting game of squat squat goose in the park before a light jog back to base!

Great work guys!!

Distributing leaflets for Loughborough Park's Litter pick

Tue 21 Sep 19:00 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
And levelling ground and moving planters at Loughborough Farm!

Loughborough Park is a great little spot right by Loughborough Junction Station, but it's had it's fair share of litter problems - we've noticed on our way through on group runs...

Some local residents have decided to take matters into their own hands by arranging litter pick sessions, showing other park-users that they care and hopefully it will eventually encourage people to stop making a mess!

They've asked us for a hand with spreading the word, popping flyers through people's doors.

It'll probably amount to a 4km or so run.

We've also been asked to help out Loughborough Farm with some levelling some ground (using shovels to shift some rocky soil) and moving some big planters - so some more demanding work if people fancy 💪

Please bring gardening gloves! 🧤🧤

New to GG Lambeth? We're a super friendly group who meet at Papa's Park near Brixton Station at 7pm on Tuesdays ALTHOUGH WE'RE MEETING JUST DOWN THE ROAD here this week because there's an event at Papa's this week. We run to a local organisation, do a physical task for them and run back by 8:30. Email me if you've got any questions??

Trim trimeny trim trimeny trim trim true...

Tue 14 Sep
Report written by Mark Gilyead

7 superstars met up for a dark task up the (Brixton) hill at Palace Road Nature Garden.

We had a quick chat about our favourite weather/time of day mixes. We all agreed tonight’s muggy vibe was not the one 👎

Then we pegged it up the hill 3k to meet Gerry who sorted us out with a pair of shears each and a section of the garden to blitz.

Basically, the little paths were getting a bit overgrown so we were trimming back ivy, nettles, brambles, grass and trees so that people would be able to walk the paths without getting stung/spiked. It was mad dark which made for some cool photos and not knowing how neat our trimming was…

Either way, 30 minutes and lots of greenery later we were done! It was then a quick jog down the hill for some stretches.

Tree-mendous work gang👍👍
