Crèche course in running

Tue 3 May
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

Since our local Life Leisure Gym facilities closed their free creche services, the amazing ladies at Life Leisure Cheadle have spent the last few weeks saving a service which is so incredibly valuable for local parents in the community. The ladies have set up a Not For Profit creche - Little Cherubs - to enable parents to continue to access affordable childcare to enable them to exercise and general have time to rest and relax, knowing that their little ones are in safe hands. Check them out here: https://www.littlecherubscreche.com/ To enable more parents to access the service, we helped Cherubs by delivering leaflets to the local area and spreading the word about this wonderful facility.

A Spring in our step

Tue 26 Apr
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

At various points in the year, GoodGym Stockport dedicate a weekly group run to nothing other than a casual and social run. To bring in the lighter nights, shake off our legs and welcome any newcomers, our group run was a leisurely Run Talk Social - a chance to catch up, enjoy a mindful run (seeing faces without a headtorch!) and learn more about GoodGym.

We chatted our way through a respectable 8km and left with a Spring definitely in our step.

Not for the PAINT hearted

Tue 15 Mar
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

After last week's successful group run helping Beyond Bea Charity to paint their newly acquired premises, we were asked back for mission two - the finishing touches and clean up extravaganza!

Beyond Bea raises awareness of baby loss and educates students and health professionals. Beyond Bea have recently got the keys to a new premises and need a helping hand to paint the offices so that they can continue their work in educating and improving awareness around baby loss. The premises were once home of Unison and previously had a garish purple decor!

The first half of our run saw 4 runners setting off from Life Leisure Avondale on a BEAutiful spring evening, with Laura joining us en route ...the Pied Piper of Stockport runners!

Arriving at the venue, Steph and her team of volunteers had already been chipping away and we got stuck straight in. Rob and Hannah in clean up mode, Laura and Sian on white touch ups and Meera taking the grey details.

While hard at work, we chatted of breathwork sessions, Harry Styles tours and Lyme Park races, and even got a few GoodGym socials in the diary!

After a solid hour and a half of painting and cleaning, we left the Beyond Bea headquarters ready for the big Thursday move day!

A picture paints a thousand words

Tue 8 Mar
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

Last night's group run saw 5 GoodGymers run out to Beyond Bea baby loss charity to give a helping hand to paint their newly acquired premises.

Beyond Bea is a wonderful charity which aims to improve care for families affected by baby loss by raising awareness and educating health care professionals in the UK.

We welcomed a new member to the team, Laura, and also saw the return of our fabulous Trafford GoodGym tourist Meera.

With lighter nights, the headtorches remained tucked away for the return journey. We set off on the 1.4 mile journey to the new premises of Beyond Bea and got a little excited with the light nights and warmer weather that we overshot our run by 100 meters of so and so doubled back to find the unsuspecting location nestled in between warehouses in Stockport. A BEAutiful haven amongst the workshops.

Steph, the founder of Beyond Bea, met us at the venue and had had a busy few days CHIPPING away at the painting already and with a vast space to fill, we got stuck straight in. The previous occupants chose a garish purple which desperately needed covering!

We were greeted with pizza treats and snacks galore and got stuck in to covering the purple with neutral grey and the peach walls with a crisp white. Meera took the doors, Rob (the professional, and the tallest of the task force) took the highs, Laura and Sian took the bare walls and Sarah, the perfectionist, took the skirting boards.

Before we knew it, the task time was over but there was still more painting to do so, never to leave a job unfinished, we will be back next with the return of the paint sessions.

With headtorches lit, we returned to base and look forward to returning next week to finish the job!

A beyond BEAutiful Tuesday evening task!

Shovel Tuesday and mudcakes

Tue 1 Mar
Report written by Sian Dobson Hughes

With post run pancakes on the brain, 5 GoodGymers set off on our Tuesday group run to help Oxfam Cheadle to clear their back yard of muddy debris, making it more inviting for donated goods to be dropped off safely.

We set out, in the light (lighter nights are coming! woohoo!) to run the 2.5km run down to our local Oxfam, where we were met by one of their friendly and dedicated volunteers, David.

Armed with shovels and brushes, we speedily 'curled' the mud into bags ready for disposal until the yard was clear.

In this week's group run, we welcomed James for his first session with GoodGym Stockport. Our old timer, Rob was on hand to lead the return run while Sarah, Jo and I backmarked, chatting of travels and chickens!

Support the charity with manual labour

About GoodGym

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects across the Stockport region.

The Task

Our local Oxfam charity shop has requested help from GoodGym to clear their back yard of debris and tidy the area to enable them to use the area safely. The shop provides much needed fund to support Oxfam and has recently been victim to fly tipping in their yard. The council has removed the rubbish but the area requires brushing down and the mud shovelling to enable the staff to use the shop safely.

The Run/Walk/Cycle

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

Our run will begin at 6pm on Tuesday 1st March from Life Leisure Avondale. We will navigate the 1.5 mile journey on foot to the Oxfam shop, complete our task and then run back again.

Toilet and parking facilities available at Life Leisure. Bring gardening gloves and mask for indoor areas. Bring a headtorch and dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
