Southwark

I'm an active person who's lost their action since moving to London from the South coast. I've never really run before except in pursuit of a ball, historically a hockey ball and more recently a football. I'd like to put all this effort to better use in some way and hope that Goodgym has some suggestions. Actually I did once do a 5km charity run, but the glory of completing it was tarnished by my friend being taken to hospital with acute dehydration having beaten his personal best for 9.8km. It was a hot day. I live in Bermondsey and am an Engineer working to reduce the energy use of buildings.

Frosty the binman

14 dedicated GoodGym folk hit the streets, took on the task and the monthly time trial.

humongous well done to that ever so dedicated goodgymer Sarah Moore for completing her 100th good deed

First up was a newcomer Kathryn who came along with Ben. Bonus points to Ben for recruiting his colleague. Then came a steady trickle of do gooders. We were super happy to welcome a few more newcomers too. Huge shouts out to Suzanna and Mark. Bonus points for Hayley who brought her husband Adam along. Oh and a mahoosive welcome back to Ali. Been a while – great to have you back on board. And last but not least a humongous well done to that ever so dedicated goodgymer Sarah Moore for completing her 100th good deed. Completing this evenings good deed would actually see her complete her 104th as she’s been do gooding every day throughout January. Great work Sarah. Keep on keeping on. Once all had arrived we joked about how buff Beth looked in her buff before heading outside to get warmed up with a game of tag along with some high knees and hustles.

Jumping Jack Frosts

Warm up and briefing done we hit the streets in search of this week's light at The Lordship Recreational Ground where we’d be helping clear a section of the grounds of litter and some glass. On arrival we grabbed brooms, a litter picker and dustpan from the nice and warm plant room then split off into groups to comb the area like a group of forensic scientists. At first we were hard pushed to find much litter at all but slowly it began to show itself and a few of the team managed to work out the most common place to find it – benches. We were all planning to meet at the bike park where I was told there was some glass that needed our attention. After stopping off at one of the many bridges leading into the recs meadow, to grab some rubbish from the streams bank, it all got a little Billy Goat Gruff (rough) in terms of the cold so we decided to keep moving toward the bike park where we were planning to get some Jumping Jack Frosts in.

we decided to ride our imaginary bikes along the bike track

At the bike park we decided to ride our imaginary bikes along the bike track and look for more litter as we did so. This warmed us up a little. We then headed over to the bike/skate ramp area to seek out this glass. Fortunately for the users of this area, but unfortunately for us, there was no glass to be found. It seemed someone had beaten us to it. Time was starting to run out so after clearing the last bit of litter we headed back to the pump room where it was very warm then heading back out to do the time trial which got everyone warm and ready for the run back to HQ. We split into little groups en route back to ensure all could run comfortably and get a good work out. As we hit the home straight I prompted everyone to take part in the sprint finish and people dug deep for the last push home. Warm down, high fives, banter and Chicken Town followed.

541 m Time Trial: (hopefully everyone remembered their correct numbers this time=))
