Helping Clear Some Ovegrown Shrubs For Local Residents

Thu 16 Sep

A local part of our town has become overgrown with brambles and weeds etc and is untidy, an eyesore and quite unsafe for local residents. We have already done one session here but it's safe to say there's still plenty more work to keep us busy!

With a few pairs of Goodgym hands, I’m sure we can have the area cleared in no time.

Please come and join us with a thick pair of gardening gloves (and probably some long trousers!) to help whip this area into shape.

Let's Cut To The Chase

Mon 13 Sep
Report written by Nicola Marshall

There’s simply no stopping this dedicated bunch of Goodgym devotees. Some weeks, some of these amazing members take part in an incredible amount of voluntary work – not all of which is for Goodgym. They are true community heroes!

Tonight was another fabulous evening spent in lovely company down at the Wishing Well. The allotment really has become a bit of a Goodgym baby – especially for those who have been so actively involved in it from day 1. We’ve really watched it transform over the months and that’s all down to the hard work of these fabulous members. It’s a delight to know that the work that’s been put in is being enjoyed – either through people enjoying the tidied up space or enjoying the produce that’s been grown and harvested from the raised beds.

Tonight Barry, Pam, Karen, Nigel, Claire & Maurice spent a lovely evening together mowing the lawns, weeding, pruning and picking litter. It was another super productive evening and everywhere was looking fabulous after an hour of hard graft from this inspiring team.

Well done everyone on another evening of hard work for an amazing cause!!

Some Great Apple Catchers!

Wed 8 Sep
Report written by Nicola Marshall

It was a super warm night tonight but it didn’t stop 10 committed Goodgym runners from coming together for their weekly run and task.

Tonight, runners made their way to the task – some cycling and some walking. It was definitely a nice night for bike ride as the breeze was very welcome!

We met at the old Manchester University building – now used for other purposes, more recently acting as the bustling COVID vaccine hub. For many of our volunteers, they were very familiar with the surroundings having spent so much time volunteering there during lockdown!

We started our evening with a warmup – as the children have recently returned to school, we gave it a school playground theme (not sure how happy everyone was about that, lol!). Our exercises included skipping, hopscotch, jumping (like we used to do in the sack race!) and a good old run (I didn’t go so far as to make them play ‘tick’). And based on last week’s community mission, I thought Nigel might appreciate some kiddie-based activities!

We had two groups tonight – a running group and a walking group. It was a hot evening, so we had a very steady run around the business park. It doesn’t sound very exciting but actually, it’s quite a green business park with lots of trees and greenery (maybe next time, we’ll take in the woodland area).

After our exercise, we headed across to Autism Inclusive where we started the task of apple picking. Some of us collected apples from the floor, while others picked straight from the tree. Apples had to be sorted into 3 categories – rotten, slightly inedible but not too bad, and good. The rotten apples were collected and went straight to compost, the slightly inedible apples were collected by a local cider company (reducing waste) and the good apples were going to the food bank.

It was a lovely evening, and it was wonderful to see other members of the community coming together to support this task. We worked alongside co-cop pioneers, local volunteers as well as the Town Council Mayor. We had good conversation and good fun. It was another successful evening filled with fun, friendship, fitness and the feel-good factor.

Hopefully the children that use the facilities of Autism Inclusive will no longer have to dodge the apples as they play!

Well done everyone. Amazing community spirit as always!

xxxx

Apple Picking In the Orchard

Wed 8 Sep 18:15 pm
Emperor Way, Crewe Business Park, Crewe, CW1 6BD
Making sure the orchard is clear of apples so the children can play easily & safely

Autism Inclusive is a local charity that are based at the old MMU Campus.

On the grounds where they run their fabulous charity from, there is an orchard that has an abundance of apple trees. As lovely as the apples are, they are in an area that the service users play and they are a hazard to the children and really need clearing.... which is where we come in :0)

We will be spending the evening collecting all the apples. It's a really different and great task and I can't wait to get stuck in. It will be great exercise too.

If you don't want sticky hands, it might be worth bringing a pair of gloves ;-)

We are going to meet outside the Ibis Hotel opposite the MMU and do our warmup and run before heading to the task. it's going to be a great evening. If you are coming along on your bike, there are bike racks at MMU where you can lock up your bike before walking across to the hotel.

Tonight’s Task: Child's Play!

Mon 6 Sep
Report written by Nicola Marshall

The nights are slowly beginning to draw in but that didn’t deter this fabulous bunch of lovelies from getting themselves down to the Wishing Well allotment. Although, this week, the purpose of the task was slightly different from the usual – tonight it was all about getting the toys set up and cleaned ready for the arrival of the children as they come back to the centre.

Emily, Karen, Nigel & Maurice spent a fabulous evening together getting everything ready. The lawns were cut, the play equipment assembled and cleaned and everywhere weeded and tidied. At times, assembling the equipment was a bit like the Krypton Factor but our fabulous team weren’t deterred!

In fact, from the pictures, you’ll see that the play equipment was thoroughly tested!!! Looking at the pictures, I’m not sure who will get the most enjoyment out of them – the children or our members (Nigel especially!).

Another amazing mission accomplished. Well done team! You’re all awesome!
