Everything Must Go πŸ‘•πŸ‘šπŸ‘—

Report written by Sam Lefevre

Not our usual Group Run night, but adding an extra one this week because TRAID needed our assistance as they had to clear out their shop for a new fashion season.

Four GoodGymers - Adam, Katy, Natalia and Sam - met at the one and only, Old Spike Roastery. As Sam informed them of some upcoming missions this weekend and next month including our last group run of the year on Wednesday 15th of December, which we'll have a Xmas social afterwards. After a quick warm-up, we had our ice-breaker question in theme with tonight's task:

Tonight's ice-breaker question - what is the one item of clothing you cannot get rid of? I said my running shoes as you never know when there's a rainy and muddy day that you can wear your old shoes and not get your new ones dirty, we also had hiking boots (which have holes in them), leather boots and a leather brown jacket....it's all about the leather goods!

Peaceful Peckham Rye Park

Adam, Katy, Natalia and Sam ran from Old Spike down towards Peckham Rye Park. The park is quite dark at night with very limited street lighting and luckily, Katy and Sam had their headtorches and paired up with the other two as they ran around Peckham Rye, back around to the Rye and down Rye Lane to TRAID, which is by The Aylesham Centre. The total run took us 15 minutes to do 2.8k. πŸ”₯

A quickie in the shop

Not quite what you are thinking, but close enough! πŸ™„ When we arrived at TRAID, Mabel greeted us, but we noticed the shop was almost clear. Liam arrived shortly after we did and joined the gang. It seemed like the staff at TRAID Peckham had pretty much done everything, but there was a small section for us to clear. As one of the staff put it, "Mabel's runners" were here. Yes, we were here, here to help out. πŸ’ͺ

Mabel and her runners

Sounds like an Indie band, with hits such as "Run Away", "Marriage is a Marathon", "Pacing for our love" and of course, the classic, "If you were miles away, I would sprint for you today (Miles Away)". 🎡

With no time to lose, we were shown what to do: take the clothes off the rack with their hangers on, fold them into a large steel cage and repeat the process, but put the next set of clothes clockwise. We all weren't on with the clockwise process, but Katy came to grips with it and was in charge. Did I mention it was a quickie? It surely was. The task was done in 15 minutes, there was even an extra bit at the end where we moved the clothes racks to the side of the shops to clear the middle. It was great to help out with what we can, but it was unexpectedly quick, so I thought we should all go for another run to complete a 5k in total. We said our goodbyes to Mabel.

We had a quick look on Google Maps to see what route we could run and I wanted to ensure we got some hills in. We identified Grove Hill as a spot to run an out and back route to reach near Peckham Rye, so that Adam could catch his train from there before the rest of us ran back to Old Spike Roastery taking the back routes. We ran just over 3k in 20 minutes, which takes our total to 5.8k tonight in 35 minutes. πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

We finished at 19:45, but seeing that this was an extra group run this week, we still got to "get fit and do good".

Tomorrow night, we have our regular Wednesday Group Run. We're flyering around Dulwich Village for Get Rid Of And Donate - GROAD. Can't make it? How about next week? We're heading to Salvation Army Nunhead to complete a task we started a few weeks ago - sorting out donated books and creating a space into a reading/library area.

Thank You Mabel & Rodrigo

GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner(s) and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mabel for letting us help out and to Rodrigo for coordinating and organising it. We'll be back to assist when you next need us!

Group Run: Clear out TRAID for new fashion season

Tue 16 Nov 18:30 pm
Old Spike Roastery, 54 Peckham Rye, London, SE15 4JR
Ensuring clothes are recycled and to promote a circular economy

TRAID needs our help like they do every quarter or so to clear out their shop in Peckham. The new fashion season is around the corner, so the autumn range needs to be packed away in large boxes and the clothes hangers sorted and packed away too. If you want to see how a shop can be transformed in an hour, come along for this group run/community mission.

This is an additional Group Run as our usual ones are on Wednesday evenings.

The "Where, When and What":

πŸ“ Meet at Old Spike Roastery for the Group Run OR at the task, TRAID near Peckham Rye Station at 19:00. If you are up for walking, you can meet us at the Old Spike Roastery and walk to TRAID whilst we run around Peckham Rye and meet you at the task.

⌚ 18:30 (leaving at 18:45 latest). If meeting at task, be there for 19:00. We will be back in Peckham by 20:15 (latest).

βœ… There will be access to Old Spike Roastery, so you can drop your bags and use their toilets before we head out.

πŸƒπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ We will be running around 2.5k around Peckham Rye Park and to The Rye and then 1k back. There will be a back marker to ensure no one gets left behind. Running at a medium pace to get to the task in 15-20 minutes.

Advisable: Bring a head torchπŸ”¦ as it's dark for the run and mask 🀿 for the indoor task.

Toys R On Us 🧸

Wed 10 Nov

Report written by Sam Lefevre

Tonight's task brought back memories of old as we were once children playing in a nursery not too long ago! Strange how the toys haven't changed much - the classics are the best!

Tonight's ice-breaker question - what was your first or favourite toy growing up? We had Mr. Snuggles (the teddy bear), tamagotchi, Bunny the rabbit (a plush toy and not a real rabbit) and Duplo

Hill Training

Emma, Emma, Katy and I met up at Old Spike Roastery for the start of our group run. Our 3k run would take us along the back roads of Peckham and up towards Grove Vale and eventually down towards Denmark Hill and Camberwell as I wanted to get some hill training in. Luckily, we did go up this route as along the way, we heard a call out in the dark - "Hey, are you GoodGym?". It was Vic, she got lost and thought we were heading to the Salvation Army on Grove Vale. Thank you Vic for coming along from Lewisham and it must have been fate that we stumbled upon each other on the group run!

Toy Meets Toy

Ooopps! Running almost ten minutes late, we made it to Salvation Army Camberwell (Corps), which acts as a baby bank and nursery during the day. Liam was waiting for us outside whilst Natalia had already met Janet inside and was showing her around the venue.

Despite the lateness, Janet had graciously prepared the tables with gloves, cloths, sponges and Dettol infused washing up buckets ready to clean and disinfect all the toys. With 50 minutes on the clock, we had to clean / disinfect all the toys from the cupboard, the play mats and the cushions, which the children use for fruit and story time.

We had a plan of action, take all the toys out of the cupboard, which the whole group got involved with. Then the system was to take the toys to the table, clean them thoroughly before setting it aside to dry in the "clean area". It was a system that worked in naturally, we started to pair up - Liam and Natalia were one team, Emma and Vic another and finally, Emma and Katy the last team. I was there just to take photos πŸ˜œπŸ˜‚

Amazingly, the task took up the whole 50 minutes as I was worry we were going to get the task done in no time and I would have to put everyone through a HIIT session. Save that for another time.

After we strategically put all the toys back in the cupboard, cleaned up and took our group photos, we were off! Not before thanking Janet and saying goodbye to Liam and Natalia, who were running and cycling in a different direction, respectively.

We ran most of the 2.5k together before Emma and Vic pealed off near The Rye.

Next week, we have a double Group Run. On Tuesday night, we're packing away clothes at TRAID and on Wednesday, we're flyering around Dulwich Village for Get Rid Of And Donate - GROAD.

Thank You Janet

GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner(s) and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Janet for staying later than usual to host us. We'll be back in the new year for more!

Weeds, beans and leaves

Sat 23 Oct

Report written by Paulin Shek

This afternoon five Goodgymers went to Thorlands gardens to join in on their weekly "green club" session. Our first task was to clear out a polytunnel so that the rest of the green club participants could fill it with plants. We then moved into the next plot to do a goodgym favourite task - weeding. We cleared away brambles, buddleia and litter. Sam and Natalia sorted out all the green and brown waste ready for composting. Rebecca became an expert with the loppers and Hannah declared war on the bindweed.

We headed home with goodies such as plants, beans and a cheetah toy.
