Brightened up my day

Sun 25 Apr
Report written by Imogen

I really enjoyed helping weed around some hedging plants by Hogsmill and then removing some bramble from Kingston Cemetery to help improve and protect habitat for yellow meadow ants. Beautiful weather, good company and worthwhile tasks.

From Alison of Kingston Biodiversity University Group 'Thanks to Good Gym and a great task along the Hogsmill yesterday. This included: painting the benches; removing flytipped rubbish; cutting up discarded debris; and weeding around the hedge that was planted last year. When finished we went into the cemetery to take the young bramble growth off the yellow meadow ant mounds. There are two pairs of grey wagtails nesting along this stretch of the Hogsmill, its a good place for house sparrows and we had a good view of a great spotted woodpecker in a young ash tree.'

Bloomin' Marvellous task working the Rose Garden project

Tue 1 Jun 18:30 pm
Fishponds Park , Off Mayberry Place, , Surbiton, , KT5 8SY
Improve the ambience and biodiversity of wildlife in our community

No pardon here as this is what we asked for...A project to work on throughout the year in Kingston.... and we got it!! So gloves on and have at it!

The rose beds at the top of Fishponds Park is the venue and as discussed with I.D Verde we are adopting them, so taking on various aspects of their maintenance through the horticultural year.

So, first Tuesday of every month, this is the place to be https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/51%C2%B023'17.2%22N+0%C2%B017'37.1%22W/@51.3881111,-0.2947332,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d51.3881197!4d-0.2936432?hl=en

Andrew is our friendly task owner for this one and should you need him on route then number that is best is 07890 999 314

Andrew has also been kind enough to share a breakdown of the plan for the area with me so let me know if you wish to know more and I can email you some details!!

....Voices of Hope is a local charity dedicated to community activities, designed to enhance physical and mental wellbeing. Together with the Council, Council contractor Idverde and the Friends of Fishponds Park, we have come up with an exciting plan to reinvigorate a corner of Fishponds Park, Surbiton. This will create a community food growing space, transform a redundant flower bed into a sensory garden and save an existing rose garden. The community allotment will include accessible footpaths for the mobility impaired, as well as a host of green infrastructure features and pollinator-friendly planting to improve biodiversity. Access to grant funding will be required to make all this possible and there is a lot of work to be done before it can be a reality. Once established, the vision includes involving various groups in maintaining and developing the area, with the possibility of using the food for community lunches and even supplying the local food bank. This project will complement the adjacent community orchard that was planted in January 2020 and create an attractive feature with fantastic potential for community use.
