Food parcel preparation, clean and restock 5.2

Sat 5 Feb 15:00 pm
Richard Benson Hall, 276 Cowley Rd, Oxford, OX4 1UR
At Oxford Mutual Aid food bank

Oxford Mutual Aid is a 7-days-a-week food bank operation, delivering food parcels to people across the city. They are staffed almost entirely by volunteers, so we try to help out once or twice a week to keep that vital food getting to people.

For the last few months Oxford Mutual Aid have been very short-staffed on Saturday shifts at the food bank, so we have spent much of our time on this shift catching up on packing food parcels to be sent out that afternoon. We will give training on this if you haven't done it before. Obviously, providing the food is the highest priority, but we always try and make sure we do some cleaning and sorting out too, as there aren't many opportunities to do that throughout the week.

Please wear a mask.

Meat-Free Monday!

Mon 20 Dec
Report written by Anwen Greenaway

Our Advent Calendar suggestion yesterday was to try Meat-Free Monday.

Lots of top tips and favourite recipes were exchanged:

  • Ben: Get a regular veg box from local farms (Cultivate) or waste food (OddBox) and make a stir fry or a curry. Also, pumpkins grown in the allotment are good for currys, cheesecake and hummus.
  • Hattie: Halloumi fajitas- chop veg (peppers onions mushrooms etc) and slice halloumi into strips, coat all lightly in oil and fajita spices, roast in oven for 20-25 mins.
  • Jo: Easy Lentil Dhal.
  • Bethan: Burrito Bowls, and a delicious pasta dish: roast a punnet of cherry toms with oil, balsamic salt and pepper and herbs for 45 mins. Plonk onto the top of your chosen pasta, add cheese, consume.
  • Milly: Vegan Tacos and mushroom wellington - perfect for a veggie Christmas!

Bank it!

Sat 11 Dec
Report written by Anwen Greenaway

A big team effort this afternoon at Oxford Mutual Aid food bank: preparing food parcels, sorting through baked goods, unpacking and consolidating fruit and vegetables, chucking out food waste, breaking down cardboard and creating order from the heaps of crates (unearthing Christmas gifts in the process).

Good work team GoodGym - there was a lot to do and you certainly rose to the challenge!

Welcome Owen - good to meet you!

Mistletoe and Bine-weed

Sat 11 Dec
Report written by Rachael H

On a, thankfully, dry day six goodgymers helped out at the Oxford City Farm. We were tasked removing brambles (standard 💪) which had grown over part of the old veg plot, and digging out roots of nettles and bindweed from the potato and bean patch so it could be covered for winter.

With the added incentive of chocolate brownies for the longest weed root dug up, Lucy, Sophie and Katie got stuck in to a treasure trove of weeds, the deeper you go the more you find! Thomas and Owen tackled the brambles - Thomas being very keen to put the sythe to good use! And Owen could not be dragged away at the end of the task, excellent dedication to bramble eradication! (or perhaps the cache of potatoes..)

After prepping the site, we tucked it in for winter with a big sheet, and then had a well earned and well received cup of tea with the sheep. The farm manager said they were considering getting some mini goats for the farm so watch this space for future tasks!

(bonus points for identifying what Katie is pointing at!)
