Being of-fense-ive

Bristol Report written by Melanie Young (she/her)

A second trip to St Paul's Community Learning Centre to the out-of-control but not-so-out-of-control-anymore garden. It wasn't too hot, nor too cold and it wasn't raining, at least at the beginning...

It was great to be joined by Vineet for the first time, who set off with not-seen-for-ages Neil in Vaguely Northern Darren's running group whilst the walkers sped along behind them.

We were soon behind the big fence and chopping, digging and clearing weeds from the area previously cleared and some more either side. More forks were out and about with a couple of nameless GoodGymmers being stronger than they knew, or the weeds being tougher than we thought.

Six-legged friends were made and kept safe, released into areas we weren't tackling, and obviously two-legged friends were made, too.

The compost heap was soon being stacked higher and higher and the ground was looking browner and tidier. And it takes more than a bit of summer rain to put us off!

Sasha was once again impressed by the amount of progress whilst she focussed on weeding the cultivated side of the garden, sensibly not letting GoodGymmers anywhere near the plants she wanted to stay in the ground.

Some great teamwork on the big brutish weeds and they were chopped and tidied, the paths were swept and the team stopped for a quick photo before heading back at varying speeds to Queen Square and Workout - another top evening and warm enough to sit outside.

Shall we do it all again next week?

Bristol Report written by Melanie Young (she/her)

Does Task A falling over stop us at GoodGym Bristol? Oh no. And Task B? Nope. Task C? Eek. Bring on the best task, saved as Task D! In the pouring summer rain! Laurie, joining us for the first time, kindly bought into this sales pitch - thanks, Laurie!

Unicornfest is a magical trail of different custom painted Unicorns, painted by many local artists. It's part of the 650th anniversary celebrations for Bristol, uniting the business and creative sectors, as well as local communities and schools across Bristol and the surrounding area, bringing art, colour and fun to the streets of the city this year. And an opportunity to collect selfies whilst raising money for Leukaemia Care.

Armed with Unicorn Divining Sticks (and bin bags), the running group set off one way and the walking group in the opposite direction to find those unicorns, take cool photos with said unicorns and make Bristol that bit tidier as we went. We even have a photo of us literally clutching at straws courtesy of Burger King rubbish.

Loads of people thanked us as they hurried past in the rain, some asked is if we were litter picking through choice, many just accepted that unicorn hunting in the rain whilst litter picking is a normal thing to do in Bristol.

The running group claimed 9 unicorns, the walkers 8 but the last one was "slightly cheeky" as a spot across the harbour from Pero's Bridge but we're counting it as the runners didn't see it when they crossed the bridge! Oh, and 6 bags of rubbish and recycling taken off our streets.
