We'd bend over backwards to play limbo at The Hamlet Centre again

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

I'd been looking forward to this task for quite some time and it didn't disappoint. Between Jan-Apr this year I'd been delivering adapted sports sessions at The Hamlet Adult's Centre and this is where we got the link to come and do a GoodGym visit with their out or hours club.

Darren was Walk Leader with Catherine and Brad as Back Runners.

We had a 2km each-way run, which included some hills towards the end ;-)

Once we arrived, the members were still arriving so we went off on another 1km hilly loop to let them settle in before the fun began.

There were 3x games areas. In the main hall we had Skittles and Giant Snakes & Ladders. In the activity room we had New Age Kurling, Hockey and Giant Badminton. Outside we had Jenga, Bowling and Table Football. We put the GoodGymers in 3 groups and they rotated round so they could experience all the activities.

To finish up the evening we all got together outside to have a game of Limbo, led by Hamlet member Katie, who may I add was very good at giving instructions and keeping everyone in order. On our way out, we all (attempted in my case) did the limbo and high-fived some of the members.

It was such a lovely evening, it's a great experience to socialise with people with learning and physical disabilities, which many of the group haven't had the chance to do before. We can't wait to visit again later in the year :-)

The evening was finished with a small group of us grabbing some food at the pub.

Next week we're visiting Mousehold Heath.

Using 'The Whacker' to fill in the holes

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

After many Community Missions and Parkruns at Catton Park, it was great to finally book in a Monday night Group Run there with the full team. The jobs were to fill in the holes on the footpath to make it more even and flat for walkers and parkrunners.

Joel & Laura were taking part in their 1st GoodGym experience so we made a big welcome to both of them.

Tom was visiting from GoodGym Ipswich, its always fantastic to see and welcome those from other GoodGym areas.

Katie was backrunner on the way there (Cheska on the way back) with Hayley on photograph duties.

It felt strange running through Catton Park with only 20+runners when it's normally with 100's of others during Parkrun.

Matt the warden met us there and had already dug up the footpath with the tractor.

Our duties were to rake it out and stamp on it with our feet and shovels. We then had a team putting wheel barrow loads of excess dirt to fill in any gaps.

Then it was time to use this amazing machine called The Whacker... everyone wanted to get their hands on it ;-) it then vibrated to flatten out the path. So you can probably get the rationale behind the pun now.

Next week we're visiting Marlpit Community Garden for what will be our 2nd Birthday Run!

Sliding our way through life

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

Summer is definitely here as we all grouped together outside instead of inside The Forum.

We had 4 new amazing GoodGymers so a big welcome to John, Danie, Dave and Jake.

Cheska kindly volunteered to be back runner.

Congratulations to Emily for completing her 25th good deed this evening.

Sarah completed her 1st ever Half Marathon yesterday in very hot conditions... and still came out to run tonight, great effort!

Our member Hayley had arranged tonight's task where she works, The Clare School, which is for children with complex needs. It was nice 2.5km each way trip.

On arrival we received cheers and then donuts were provided to restore our energy levels :-)

The jobs were to tidy up the garden areas with the main focus on the sensory garden used by the students.

35 minutes later it looked like a transformed place, so many weeds (and probably the odd flower haha) pulled up in 35 minutes. I'm not even sure we've ever had such a gardening success.

Hayley took some awesome photos too, which meant I could chip in with the task more this week.

It was a task we sure left our mark on, I'm very proud of you all.

Before we headed back a few of us had a go on the slide, which the speed caught me by surprise as I went crashing on the floor at the end of it!

Robert then topped of the night with a supply of Lemon Drizzle cake ahead of his birthday.

Next week is our 100th Group Run! Let's break our record turnout so invite a friend or family member along as we visit Oxfam Charity Shop.

Edward Shear-enhands

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

Bill and Katy were both doing their 100th GoodGym deed tonight. What an unbelievable achievement! They are the only remaining members from the very 1st GoodGym Norwich run 2 years ago and are such great ambassadors of what we're all about. Plus they brought us cake!!

Katie and Jason were on their 1st GoodGym experience so a big welcome to them :-)

We had plenty of races to catch up on from the weekend from those who took part in the Wroxham 5K, Colchester Zoo 10K, Hackney Half and Nuclear Races Mud Run. For the latter, Brad did send photographic evidence of Emily's butt bruise on the WhatsApp group but being the gent that (kind of) I am I haven't shared it on the run report haha.

Tonight we were visiting Marlpit Community Gardens, a picturesque location near the Wensum Valley, which is a 4km each-way run. It was a lovely warm clear evening, perfect for a task like this.

Local guru Mahesh was there to meet us. The tasks in hand were to weed the concrete area, pull out weeds amongst the herb garden (only the weeds Michaela!), shear the verges, rake the long cut grass and brush down the concrete area (Hayley said she can handle a big one so took on the large broom). So loads to do in 35 minutes but this makes such a big difference to a local community garden.

Despite having lots to do I did put my rubber gloves on and offered a free health check for anyone who wanted to take me up on the offer... which unsurprisingly was no-one :-(

After all of the hard work, we piled up the produce (no pun intended) and it was then you could really see how much we achieved.

We could have stayed all evening but there was cake awaiting at The Forum so we did have to head back, despite us already being 20 minutes late.

The cake was amazing Bill and Katy... I didn't have 3 pieces, honest.

Next week we're still running on bank holiday and it's a long one (11km) as we visit Redmayne View Care Home for a reminiscence evening with the residents.

All the Goodgymers, so many Goodgymers, they all run hand in hand, weeding, sweeping & picking-litter... PARKLIFE!

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

Tonight was our quarterly visit to Eaton Park, which on a fine sunny evening is just simply breathtaking! Masses of greenery with people playing Football, Touch Rugby and Cricket in different areas of the park.

Freya was participating in her 1st GoodGym experience so a big welcome to the group :-)

Sophie was doing her 10th good deed (well 11th actually as I forgot to announce her 10th last week!).

We caught up on the races from the weekend with various folk taking part in the Henham Festival of Running and the Dereham 10-miler.

Darren also announced he's raised more than £1,500 in sponsorship for Cancer Research from running the London Marathon - what a fantastic effort!

Bill was backrunner this week and Katy led parts whilst I got caught chatting to people.

On arrival, Stuart greeted us and went through the jobs that needed doing, which included sweeping the pond area, weeding in the cafe area, weeding around the band stand and a litter pick around the perimeter of the park. We soon assembled into little groups and off into the evening sunshine.

Myself and Bill couldn't resist a little bit of tractor tyre flipping in the cafe area.

After we finished, Stuart kindly let us go up to the top of the band stand to admire the view of Eaton Park from higher up.

The evening was finished with a nice trip to the pub :-)

Next week we're visiting Marlpit Community Gardens.
