Hillraiser

We gathered around our new briefing spot (less mud) and welcomed first timers Fran, Annie and Alex this evening. We also gave Paul Bown (now known as P.B) and Aidan a cheer for the PBs yesterday at the Regents Park 10k, and reminded people not to forget the Christmas Party this Friday. Bring some treats.

We had a lot to fit in. Our task was to promote the Hillrise Winter Festival for Caxton House. Paul led a faster group up to the community centre while Simon led a philosophy group. On the journey we discussed whether or not cyclists should be allowed to jump traffic lights. From a definite "NO" from the majority of the group early on most did concede that there were circumstances where it didn't really matter (e.g. 5am when there is absolutely nobody around).

We also discussed Neighbours (the ozzie soap) and how Caxton House seemed to get further away every time we visited and how it seemed like a hillier journey than usual.

At Caxton House, Sue - the most organised task leader in the world - dished out bundles of flyers, each with a highlighted map attached and we split into groups, then split further, then split even further, so we could attack the streets. We didn't have long, but with so many of us at it we got loads done and all met back at the centre, some of us cursing the giant hills that we had just had to navigate, but all feeling assured that we had done our bit of good.

We headed off as a single group - which soon became three - down to Emirates Stadium. Paul led the speedsters through some warm up drills and when we had all arrived Linda - chief photographer for the evening - got us all gathered for a shot.

Raring to go we lined up for the time trial. BANG. the wind had eased up a little compared to the last few days and we had some great efforts. A notable performance tonight from Patrick Murphy, who said it "hurt all the way round" to get well under three minutes with a 2:54.

Post time-trial we needed a treat and Simon revealed some homemade delights: peanut butter and jam "sandwich" biscuits. Only a few of them were slightly burnt and generally well appreciated.

Next week is our Christmas run. Wear a santa hat or something festive cos we'll be running round the streets delivering decorations to local hostels.

Until then, Simon
