Support the creation of a sustainable sensory garden in Finchley

We will look to support the development of a sensory garden at Finchley Way open space Providing a sustainable habitat for pollinating insects and an enjoyable recreational area. Please sign up if you wish to support and get involved in creating this sensory garden. Activity dates to be advised.
Friends of Finchley Way Open Space became a registered charity in December 2020. Finchley Way Open Space which is a local green space, much of which had been neglected for many years.
This will be a rolling community mission.
A sensory garden is all about stimulating and engaging the five basic senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste’. To this end the area will need a mixture of plants that are visually attractive, have a strong fragrance, that rustle in the wind, that have leaves with different textures and that are edible. For edible we will probably use herbs to minimise maintenance. A key to sustainability will be to choose plants that are self-seeding or perennials and that will be sustainable in the face of climate change.

Come, help and learn some of the history of this unique site that has been left to the people of Finchley.
This was the site of Brent Lodge house and garden, built in 1810, owned by Mr F A Hamilton from 1865 until 1902. Brent Lodge was put up for sale in 1907 with an estate of 26 acres. It was then a substantial mansion described as “in the Italian style”. The house and gardens were the site of an early 20th century experiment in co-operative housekeeping pioneered by Alice Melvin, a Finchley resident and supporter of the garden cities movement. It was later demolished and the site was given over as green space. It is now being developed by the local community. (charity)
Please meet at the entrance to The Green Field in Finchley Way, N31AG. Contacts Alan and Suzanne Friends of Finchley Way Please wear boots and bring gardening gloves. All welcome.

Anisha is a now a fully fledged GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the first time. They are out there making amazing things happen and getting fit at the same time.

Anisha completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Anisha was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.
