A swift shift at the BB

Fri 1 Apr
Report written by Alice Searle

What a difference a couple of weeks makes - the Baby Bank is looking sorted in their temporary premises! I had a few bags of boys clothes for them so popped down mid morning and spent an hour or so sorting donations. Such a lovely team - always love a Friday morning there!

Branching Out

Mon 21 Mar
Report written by Sheila Attenborough

Storms Eunice and Franklin had made a bit of a mess of the churchyard at All Saints, bringing down lots of branches in the wind. Juli, Alice and Sheila took on the task of clearing the debris, and piling the branches by the gate to be collected by the local council. We welcomed the help of some passers by and before we knew it, we had amassed a huge heap. Anita got busy with a hoe, clearing the edge of the path from the encroaching grass and weeds, and was later joined by Juli. It's a very long path, so we were unable to complete this task - we will have to make a return visit. It was lovely to be out in the spring sunshine and the churchyard looked really pretty with daffodils, primroses and violets all on show. The churchyard now looks a lot tidier - well done everyone!

Garden makeover at All Saints Junior School

Wed 6 Apr 18:45 pm
The Windsor Castle Pub, Bath Road, Maidenhead, SL6 4JT
Help create a fantastic outdoor space where plants and children can grow

All Saints CofE Junior school have grand designs for their outdoor space and this evening we will give them a hand with jobs including filling a skip. Sounds like a very fulfilling workout!

The session will start outside the Windsor Castle Pub with a welcome, and warm up. The walkers will then set off on a 1-2km route to the school, whilst the runners will take a more circuitous 3-4km. All paces are welcome and we will have a back marker to make sure no one gets left behind.

We'll arrive a the school nice and warm and ready to get stuck in to the task. Gardening gloves and head torches are a must, particularly as the garden area is un-lit and the ground is uneven. Once we've ticked off the jobs on the to do list, we'll celebrate with a fun fitness session before heading back to our start location for stretches and goodbyes.

Stepping Up for Ukraine

Sat 19 Mar
Report written by Amanda Quincey

The GoodGymers did a toe-tally awesome job of rummaging through their old shoe cupboards to find unworn and pre loved footwear that could be shipped out to Ukraine via a local collection point. The team trod the right path by scrubbing the shoes into they shon making them look truly boot-iful.

Toe-riffic Sophie gathered up shoes from across Maidenhead with donations from the wonderful Sara, Vickie, and Diya. Whilst Alice put her heart and sole into the task by organising a delivery of shoes to Amanda’s house.

Amanda stepped up to the challenge of sorting and bagging up a toe-tally amazing 86 pairs of shoes, trainers, sandals, boots and more….. and of course, managed to shoe -horn a few good puns into this report!

Stepping Up

Sat 19 Mar 12:00 pm
., ., .
Donate your unwanted footwear to the people of Ukraine

Ukraine has been devastated with millions of residents forced to leave their homes for safer areas leaving behind their loved ones and possessions. At the same time in the UK, over 300 million pairs of shoes are thrown into landfill every year. Help us collect unwanted footwear from across the borough and send them to their new home.

GoodGym is supporting a collection of used children and adults footwear which will be transported to Ukraine to help those in need. Dig around your cupboards and car boots to find shoes, trainers, boots that you or your family members no longer need. Any footwear will be accepted providing it is hole-free and clean, so get your muscles working by giving them a scrub until they sparkle, bundle them into pairs (with a ribbon / elastic band around each pair please), and drop them to Sophie Lack in Holyport by end of day Wednesday 16th March 2022, or to Amanda Quincey in Windsor by 1200 on Saturday 19th March. Why not get your GoodGym feel-good endorphins by walking, running to cycling to Amanda or Sophie's. Message Amanda for drop off location details.

Helping the Baby Bank

Fri 1 Apr 09:30 am
John West House, Howarth Road, Maidenhead, SL6 1AA
Help provide essentials to vulnerable families

The Baby Bank helps families in extreme need with everyday essentials such as nappies, wipes, school uniform and shoes, as well as larger items such as cots and buggies. They are completely volunteer run and rely on donations of new items and good quality second hand clothes, baby care equipment and furniture. During the Covid-19 crisis, demand for the Baby Bank's help has increased dramatically.

We can help by sorting through donations, preparing bundles ready for delivery and cleaning donated furniture.

A few important notes:

- This task is indoors and face coverings are requested.

- Please note the new location. The entrance is on the right hand side of John West House through a green door next to the large green garage style door with a big number 5. Click here for a dropped pin to the location on Google Maps.

- Please note your Area Activator Amy may not be present at the task and the task may need to be cancelled if we do not find an experienced GoogGym member to lead. If necessary, notice of cancellation will be sent by email no later than 9pm the night before. Please check your junk mail as well to make sure you're kept in the loop.

- The task is listed for an hour but there may be the opportunity to stay and help for longer.

Pack it up, pack it in, help the Baby Bank move in

Sat 12 Mar
Report written by Amy Lovell

Lots of GoodGymers helped out the Baby Bank this weekend as they moved home. This vital charity help families in need with everything from nappies and moses baskets to coats and school uniform, and they need to hold a lot of stock so they can respond quickly to referrals. Shifting all that stuff to a new warehouse is no small job.

Well done to Rachel, Clara, Jess, and Alice, who joined me in helping out on Saturday. Also a very warm welcome to Rachel as this was her first GoodGym session. Rachel was packing up in the old premises whilst I was unloading at the new site, so we didn't actually get the chance to meet. Rachel you must come back soon so I can say a proper hello!

A big cheer for Anna and Roberta, who helped out on Sunday. Anna reported back that it was great to meet Roberta and Roberta shared a brilliant video of Anna in action (captured in the photo for the Sunday report).

And finally congratulations to the Baby Bank and kudos to their volunteers and to Green Bros Removals, who were helping them free of charge. They worked tirelessly all weekend and must be shattered!

We look forward to continuing to help this brilliant charity with sorting donations in their new home. Keep an eye on our 'happenings' page for more sessions.
