RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch: DIY logging

Sun 30 Jan 16:00 pm
A garden near you, Any GoodGym region, Anywhere
Enjoy watching birds and support RSPB with data collection

This community mission can be carried out at any stage over the three-day period 28-30 January 2022. Feel free to do this either individually or in a small group, ensuring that you adhere to the COVID-19 guidance.

Set aside an hour to watch the birds, it could be in your own garden, or out in the countryside; log the different species, and count how many of each land in the area. Once the hour is up, log your observations on the RSPB website.

As well as signing up to this community mission, please also sign up here on the RSPB website in advance. There's lots of useful information on there, giving identification advice, and hints on what foods can be used to tempt birds into your garden.

If you take any pictures, please send them to tracey@traceycool.plus.com for inclusion in the write-up.

A bird of prey visited my garden last year (see photo) - I'm wondering whether he'll make a return trip, but the pigeons will be hoping that he doesn't reappear!

Fri 21 Jan
Report written by Sheila Attenborough

The Maidenhead Baby Bank has recently started accepting donations again, and Sheila was faced with a mountain of bags of clothes that needed to be checked that they were of good quality, and then sorted into sizes ready for handing out to families in need. Everyone has obviously been having a good New Year sort out! For every bag sorted, another two seemed to come in. Sheila handed the virtual baton on to Alice to continue to tackle the mountain - but still plenty more to be done!

The Generation Game (GoodGym game, GoodGym game)

Sat 15 Jan
Report written by Amy Lovell

Today's event was all about generations... the generation of a new generation of trees, planted by generations, for the benefit of future generations!

As we all know, GoodGym is for over 18s only, and you'll only find adults listed on this run report. However today's session at Ockwells Park was part of a public event hosted by RBWM and they explicitly invited families along. Lots of GoodGymers took the opportunity to drop in with (and take full responsiblity for) their children, and it was really nice to see them, to see them...nice!

And didn't they do (Ock)well?

There was a brilliant turn out at the event. I stopped by in the morning with my family and there were around 30-40 people on site, including GoodGymers Anita, Paul, Kevin, and Emily and Nivi with their families. Everyone was busy digging holes, shimmying saplings into their protective casings, burying their roots, and securing everything with stakes.

We had a lovely sociable and muddy time. It felt refreshing to be outside in a frosty green setting, helping a project that aims to boost biodiversity and fight climate change. It also felt great to be teaching the next generation about all this good stuff while we were at it. As we worked the sun came out, and one of my 4 year olds hummed a happy tune all the way back to the car park.

As we headed home for lunch, Vicky, Charlotte, Jess, Kelley and Michelle were heading to the planting site. It was great to see their smiling faces popping up in photos in our group WhatsApp during the afternoon.

And if we were to have a look at the old score board..?

Well this wasn't a competition, but there are certainly some impressive numbers to report. Rosie from the RBWM Countryside team estimates that around 600 trees will have been planted today, making a really decent dent in the 7000 trees they hope to plant this season. Before today GoodGym had planted around 735 trees, and we think we managed well over 100 today.

A special mention to Anita, who stayed at the site for 3 hours and planted an impressive 26 trees!

We have set ourselves the goal of planting 1000 trees this season and we expect to smash this at our next Ockwells tree-planting session on the 30th. Click here to join us!. Please note that the next session is for GoodGym only, so we regret under 18s are not permitted.

Sorting, packing and sorting some more!

Fri 14 Jan
Report written by Alice Searle

When I arrived, it was busy at the door and not many volunteers on site to help today, so I got cracking and started sorting the donations. I then helped with a couple of referrals for winter clothes for local teenagers... and did some more sorting! It feels like an endless pile of donations sometimes but I know that every session we do really helps them out and the items go to very appreciative local families!

Speed Sorting at The Baby Bank

Fri 7 Jan
Report written by Alice Searle

The Baby Bank has had a makeover over the Christmas holidays - we have lights!!! With the Christmas gifts now all sent to local kids, our attention has turned to the hoards of donated clothes that need checking and sorting. The rag collection is due on Monday so Kanika and I got cracking with some speed sorting to get through as much as we could in the limited time we had. We managed to sort around 10 black bags full of rags, ready for Monday. Whilst it's a shame that some of the clothes can't be used, The Baby Bank receives money for the rags so it's still helping to raise money for this great charity!

Family friendly tree planting at New Thrift Wood

Sat 15 Jan 11:00 am
Ockwells Park, Maidenhead, SL6 3YX
Stop by anytime between 11am and 3pm to plant some trees - bring a spade and gloves!

The RBWM Countryside team are hosting a family friendly tree planting session at Ockwells Park and we are invited. Please read on for more details as this session is a bit different to our typical tree planting community mission.

GoodGym is for adults only, so only those aged 18+ can sign up to this listing and be credited with a GoodGym good deed. However, the borough are hosting this event and they are welcoming families, so you may bring younger friends and relatives on the understanding that they are your responsibility.

The event is running from 11am until 3pm and you are welcome to stop by at anytime. The location will be sign-posted from the Ockwells Park Car Park. It is also the same area we planted trees on the 3rd and 8th of January, so some of you will know it. If you're nervous about finding your way by yourself, reach out in the GoodGym WhatsApp group to find a walking/running buddy or two. If you're not part of the group and want to join, please contact Amy on 07939487106.

Both the planting site and the footpaths can be very muddy, wet and uneven underfoot, so we recommend boots rather than trainers.

You will also need gloves and if possible a spade! We aren't normally asked to bring tools, but extra spades would be a great help on this session.

The trees we plant today will help connect areas of ancient woodland, creating a great haven for flora and fauna, as well as helping fight the battle against climate change. We are unlikely to see the site mature within our lifetimes, but we hope it will be appreciated by future generations... and in the meantime we'll certainly enjoy a sociable outing of planting and soaking up nature!

Helping the Baby Bank

Fri 21 Jan 09:30 am
4 Providence Place, Maidenhead, SL6 8AG
Help provide essentials to vulnerable families

The Baby Bank helps families in extreme need with everyday essentials such as nappies, wipes, school uniform and shoes, as well as larger items such as cots and buggies. They are completely volunteer run and rely on donations of new items and good quality second hand clothes, baby care equipment and furniture. During the Covid-19 crisis, demand for the Baby Bank's help has increased dramatically.

We can help by sorting through donations, preparing bundles ready for delivery and cleaning donated furniture.

The entrance is down a couple of steps opposite Monello Hairdressing. Look for a red door and the pull up stand with the Baby Bank logo, which is in the background of the photo on the listing. If you get lost call Amy on 07939487106.

This task is indoors and face coverings are mandatory. It can also get very chilly in the storage facility so wrap up warm!

The task is listed for an hour but there may be the opportunity to stay and help for longer.

Please note your Area Activator Amy may not be present at the task and the task may need to be cancelled if we do not find an experienced GoogGym member to lead. If necessary, notice of cancellation will be sent by email no later than 9pm the night before. Please check your junk mail as well to make sure you're kept in the loop.
