The Graveyard Shift!

Wed 27 Jul
Report written by Rachel Moynagh

Eleven Goodgymers signed up for tonight’s task to continue the clear up of the Vale Road Cemetery. We met in the car park at the Pirate Park in Windsor slightly dismayed by the inclement weather, but that soon passed as we greeted Michelle to the group.

From the car park we moved ( some more reluctant than others !! ) towards the Clewer Recreational Ground where we spent the first part of the fitness session doing fun exercises including the ministry of funny walks and some dance steps, lots of laughter was had by all.

We paired off and ran or walked the inner circuit of the park, meeting our partner with 10 squats or 3 burpees.

Then we were off to the mission, we all decided to walk the short distance; the dead giveaway that we were in the right place was the mountain of black bin bags full of ivy and brambles.

Sue, the task owners met us and led us to the end of the cemetery where we split into groups, one clearing ivy from graves and the other filling large hippo bags of ivy and brambles. After a hour of weeding with no grave mistakes and all the ivy covered our time was up!! We were all twigger happy and lined up for a team photo.

With our spirits risen we returned to our meeting point to say our goodbyes and wish Amy a very happy holiday.

A less blue Monday

Mon 25 Jul
Report written by Nicola

We were back at All Saints Junior School to continue with the hallway paint job started the previous week. Armed with brushes and rollers and joined by honorary GoodGymers Emma and Lisa, we were able to add another coat of white to the walls, which are definitely looking less blue than when we started!

Cemetery Tidy Up

Wed 27 Jul 18:45 pm
The Pirate Park, Dedworth Road, Windsor, SL4 5BD
Help local residents tidy up the Vale Road Cemetery

#WednesdayNightIsGoodGymNight and this evening we are excited to be heading to Windsor. Our help is needed to tidy up Vale Road Cemetery, and we will make the most of the nearby park to do some running or walking and fun fitness before the task.

The evening kicks off at 6.45pm in the car park for the pirate park/Clewer Memorial Rec. If you're new to GoodGym, look out for a friendly group wearing fitness gear and red GoodGym t-shirts. We will start with a welcome and warm up before running or walking into the park for our fitness session, which has been designed to cater to all fitness levels. We will stay in sight of each other and make sure we have a back marker so no one need worry about getting lost.

Next up, we'll walk or run the short distance to the cemetery on Vale Road, where we will meet task owner Sue and get stuck in to weeding and tidying up the area. We will need to be careful not to disturb nesting birds but with many hands we still hope to make a big difference in a short time.

We will then head back to our start location for stretches and goodbyes.

Can't wait to see you there!

High rollers

Wed 20 Jul
Report written by Amy Lovell

What a relief to be rained on this evening after the oppressive heat of the last couple of days! And what a joy to be out getting fit and doing good with a great bunch of people.

We met under the shelter of an obliging tree in Boyn Grove Park, welcomed everyone and kicked off with a discussion about whether we should head straight to the task or have a play in the rain in the park first. Playing in the rain won of course, so we warmed up our legs with some slightly silly drills and then went for a lap of the park. Well done to everyone for powering up the big hill!

We then walked together the short hop to All Saints Junior School, where a blue corridor was awaiting its first coat of white paint. We were welcomed by task owner Carl, he showed us which bits to paint and which bits to leave and equipped us with plenty of brushes and rollers. Then we set to work. After about an hour we were proud to have covered almost the entire space - more than we imagined we would manage on arrival. There had also been lots of laughter and happy chatter, some miaowing, some excellent use of tall people and ladders to for the high bits, and we even washed a wall!

We then headed out into the (now even heavier) rain for a quick fitness session involving resistance bands, penguins, burpees, and a three-legged race. Such fun!

Thanks to all who came along and well done on a great session! If you're up for helping with coat 2 on Monday evening, click here for more details and to sign up.

It's (another) paint job!

Wed 20 Jul 18:45 pm
Boyn Grove Open Space and Play Area, Maidenhead, SL6 6JD
Group run or walk to freshen up the halls at All Saints Junior School

#WednesdayNightisGoodGymNight and this Wednesday it's a case of School's out for Summer, GoodGym is in for a paint job!

We'll meet and welcome everyone at Boyn Grove Park at 6.45pm, before a sociable and fun 'meet and retreat' session around the park. If the concept is new to you then don't worry! The brilliant thing about meet and retreat is it allows us all to go at our own walking or running pace whilst staying within sight of each other. Amy will demonstrate how it works on the night.

We will then head to nearby All Saints Junior School, where we'll dive into the task - rollering white paint onto the walls in the hallway, brightening the area ready for a new school year.

Remember you might get a bit paint splattered so avoid wearing your smartest sports kit.

We will finish with a quick fitness session (think squats, planks and laughter, with plenty of low impact options for those with injuries or new to fitness) and then we will head back to Boyn Grove to stretch and to say goodbye.

Can't wait to see you there!

The fruit and veg at Maidenhead Community Allotment were left feeling happier after we visited for the latest of our sunny watering missions.

We gave everything a drink and refilled one of the water butts, and Rachel also managed to fit in a spot of weeding.

It was great to welcome Sol too - we look forward to seeing you at another task soon!

Jen-uinely the best cake ever. You've gateau try it!

Wed 13 Jul
Report written by Amy Lovell

This evening's group run/walk had all the ingredients for the perfect GoodGym session:

sunshine, a scenic route, a mix of tasks, netball, skipping, hula hooping, butter, sugar, flour, eggs, chocolate, whipped cream, cherries, Georgeta's magical baking skills, and above all....drumroll please....Jen! Congratulations Jen on achieving a whopping 250 good deeds and thank you for giving us a reason to celebrate.

We met at Homebase and enjoyed a fairly chilled out walk/run to St Luke's. It was too hot for much more! Thanks to Juli and Gillian, who showed us the scenic route along the Greenway. It was great to catch up with everyone while we walked, with much chatter about the up coming Beat the Boat race and some super inspiring tales of wild swimming in Slovenia.

Thanks to task owner Jon, who met us at the school gates and gave us our tasks - weeding the quiet area, re-distributing the wood chip around the climbing frames and cleaning the bike sheds.

Georgeta, Gillian and Juli jumped at the chance to do some weeding and couldn't resist clearing some leaves too. Kim Rachel and I channeled our inner zen gardeners whilst raking the wood chip, and Sophie and Jen got their upper body workout whilst making the bike shelters shine. Well done everyone!

On discovering a large hula hoop and a skipping rope I was like a child in a playground and wasted no time setting up a fitness circuit, which also included mountain climbers, jumping over a hoe, tricep dips, zig zag runs and a mini game of netball - just what we needed to earn our cake!

Finally it was time for cake and to give Jen a big cheer for her AMAZING milestone. Here is a poem to celebrate her achievements:

250 good deeds…plus 3

Jen Simpson, you inspire me!

She came to our first ever group run

She even wrote the title pun.

A pioneer of social visits,

Nothing is too much for Jen is it?

Vaccination clinics and wellbeing calls,

Weeding schools and painting walls,

She sweeps the floors and waters pot plants

Sometimes wearing Christmas hot pants!

She’s committed to her daily steps

In fitness sessions she’ll do all the reps.

She’s also a big fan of parkrun

And she brings her mum to join the fun.

Jen’s saved in my phone as Jen GG Slough

But she’s just as much one of us now.

Jen, GoodGym Queen, you deserve a chateau…

But in the meantime there’s black forest gateau!

3 cheers for Jen!

It's a paint job!

Mon 25 Jul 18:00 pm
All Saints Church of England Junior School, Westborough Road, Maidenhead, SL6 4AR
Help freshen up the halls at All Saints School

School's (nearly) out for Summer...so GoodGym are in! Help All Saints Junior School prepare for a fresh school year with a lick of paint or two in their halls. I'm expecting some good before and after pictures from this task.

The paint colour will be white. I'm sharing this in case you want to plan ahead to match your clothing to the inevitable paint splatters.

The entrance to the school is on Westborough Road. Please meet at reception ready to start at 6pm. There is parking available in the school car park or on Westborough Road if needed. The school is also a short hop from the delightfully hilly Boyn Grove Park if you're looking for a pre-task fitness location!

Gardening at St Luke's School

Wed 13 Jul 18:45 pm
Homebase Car Park, Stafferton Way, Maidenhead, SL6 1AY
Group run or walk plus a spruce up of the school's 'quiet area'

In Windsor and Maidenhead #WednesdayNightIsGoodGymNight and this Wednesday's group walk or run takes us to St Luke's Primary School, where the 'quiet area' in the playground is in need of some TLC. We expect to be weeding, digging and planting, so bring your gardening gloves.

Before we get stuck into the task we'll start the evening by welcoming everyone and warming up at our start location - outside Homebase on Stafferton Way. Please arrive promptly for a 6.45pm start.

We'll then have a quick warm up before setting off on our run or walk to the school. The walk is about 1.5km through the centre of Maidenhead. but the run can be longer with the option of some extra loops along the way. GoodGym is for everyone. You can choose what pace you go and we will always have a back marker to make sure no one gets left behind.

On arrival at the school we will brief everyone on the task and get busy. Whether you've got green fingers or not, there will be something you can help with, and we always have a sociable time while we work.

We'll finish at the school with a fun fitness session in the playground and then we will head back to Homebase running or walking the same way we came. At Homebase we'll stretch together before seeing everyone off safely home around 8.30pm.

Can't wait to see you there!
