GoodGym and MIND in Camden

Camden Report written by Adele Prince

Two people power walked their way to Castlehaven, to clear litter from the outdoor spaces.

This week I was joined again by Alex, who has been really committed to joining our sessions, well done Alex! We power walked our way over to Castlehaven, where we gathered hoops and bags, litter-pickers and gloves. We made our way around the park area, spotting discarded litter and chatting about our week. Once this was done (it was very tidy!), we gave the all-weather pitch a tidy too.

Great work Alex!

Two enthusiastic people took on 2km of power walking and cleared litter and leaves at Castlehaven.

This week Alex and I headed back to Castlehaven to finish off our leaf-clearing and litter-picking task. In just 20 minutes, we had a bag full of plastic bottles (these footballers need to grab themselves reusable bottles!) and a great big pile of leaves.

Having flown through our task, we used the nearby paths for a fitness session, with press-ups, tricep dips and squats, good work!

GoodGym and MIND in Camden at Castlehaven

Camden Report written by Adele Prince

Brightening up a grey day in Camden, three eager people took to the streets to cover 1.5km of power walking and cleared litter and leaves at Castlehaven.

Today was the start of our New Year activities, with two people turning up to join in. Hello again to Alex and welcome to Matthew, who joined us for the first time. We started off with a few dynamic stretches to warm up before we set off towards Castlehaven. Matthew was keen to find out when we might be jogging, but we decided a good power walk would be plenty to start off with (you don't want to jump into running too quickly, building up slowly with walking/power walking then jogging is the best way to go).

We soon arrived at Castlehaven, where Paul wished us a happy new year and took us round to the sports court to see our task for the morning. The leaves were piled high against the edge of the fence and all along here were discarded drinks bottles, it looks like football is thirsty work! Choosing our litter-pickers, we also grabbed a couple of bags and got stuck in, working our way along the edge and chatting as we went. We very quickly cleared the whole court, filling three (!) bags with bottles and other random bits and bobs! Good work!

This cleared the way for us to rake up the leaves, so I demonstrated the best technique (though Alex is a pro these days) and we worked as a team, raking, then scooping the leaves into the big sack. It's amazing how quickly time passes and we were very soon collecting all our tools and taking everything back to the storage area, popping our gloves back and gearing up for our return leg.

A bit more power walking and we were back with enough time to try out some wall press-ups - these are a good way in to press-ups, building up slowly instead of going straight in to full press-ups, which are really hard work! A few stretches for aching backs and we said our goodbyes until next week.

GoodGym and MIND in Camden at Castlehaven

Camden Report written by Adele Prince

On a beautiful autumn morning, two enthusiastic GoodGymmers paced their way to Castlehaven to clear the leaves.

It's definitely autumn, the cool air, the crisp morning sunshine and...the leaves! Alex and I made our way over to Castlehaven, where Paul had lined up a good upper body workout for us. Gathering our tools: rakes, brushes, sacks, scoops and gloves, we headed out into the park. Alongside the all-weather pitches is a high fence that is a leaf magnet at this time of year, so we quickly worked out a plan of action and got busy sweeping and raking the fallen leaves into what turned out to be massive piles!

With an excellent system of rake, sweep, scoop, we quickly filled two big green sacks and decided to drag these over to the storage area to decant the leaves into a much bigger sack. Once we'd cleared the outer edge, we moved inside to de-leaf the pitch itself. Alex discovered he's really good at scooping up the leaves and I discovered my phone had run out of charge, so I couldn't take that all-important 'after' picture, so annoying when we had some great shots lined up!

Four big sacks of leaves later (and a few stray bits of discarded footie detritus) and we were all done. Great work team!

GoodGym and MIND in Camden group run #4

Camden Report written by Adele Prince

Three volunteers paced fast over 2km to clear litter at Castlehaven in Camden.

This week I was pleased to welcome back Alex and Oliver after the summer break and to hear about what they have been up to in the past few weeks. Our group run this week was heading over to Castlehaven, a distance of about 1km there and 1km back.

We were feeling fairly energetic this time, so kept up a good pace there, with Alex pointing out how very fast Oliver and I were marching - sorry Alex! At Castlehaven, we were met by Paul, who looks after the gardens and outdoor spaces here. He took us over to the arches, where we were shown a very impressive selection of professional litter-picking tools (I was possibly a little over-excited by this). With our litter pickers and bags-in-hoops in hand, we made our way out to the open space and gradually worked along the edges and paths, gathering any discarded rubbish as we went.

The space was surprisingly clean but, after just over half-an-hour of scouring, we had all managed to half fill our individual bags, not bad eh?! Next week we will return here to clear the leaves, which will now need to be kept on top of as autumn appears. Good work chaps!

GoodGym and MIND in Camden group run #3

Camden Report written by Adele Prince

Two happy power walkers powered their way through Camden to help out at Castlehaven.

This week I was joined by Alex and we were happy to also be joined by the sunshine! After last week's drizzle, this was NICE. After a little introduction and chat about fitness goals and achievements, we did a little warm-up and made our way over to Castlehaven, around 1km away. Boy, it was hot (yes, we did chat about how we always manage to find something to moan about weather-wise, even on a gorgeous day!).

At Castlehaven, we were met by Giles, who told us about the community fun day that took place at the weekend (it looks like it was the rain-type-moaning that happened then, but it certainly didn't stop play!). We were taken over to the big storage area under the arches, where Giles showed us a big sack of topsoil, to be used in the lovely new greenhouse that I worked on in the first week. This sack is huge and there's no way you could carry it over in one go, so our task for today was to transfer the soil to smaller sacks and move these out of the way, to the side of the space.

Our workspace was nice, with a bit of shade, a gentle breeze and also a nice chat with gardener Paul and his colleague. As we dug and shifted, we talked about hobbies (Alex has done a lot of fishing), holidays and diet (how on earth do we satisfy all the hunger that comes from being active?!). Time flew by, as always and we transported our last few sacks on the trolley, counting up eight black bags and one big green sack - impressive work!

A brisk stroll back to Camden Road and we were all done. Well done Alex, it was hard work in the sunshine, but you did a great job! See you next time!
