I went to see Mrs D today, she was feeling rather sleepy and was blaming the weather for it, the dark grey days and lots of rain that we've been having. Nevertheless, there were a few stories to be told, so we got on with it.
She mentioned one of her favorites, the milkman who came knocking on their front door in the middle of the night, asking to be paid. She and her husband were living in a terraced house at the time. It was 2am, she wasn't to go downstairs, so she opened the bedroom window, which was on the first floor, and told him to go away and come back at a reasonable time. He was still banging on the door asking her to tip the money out of the window for him. She said she wasn't gonna chuck money out the window as it would end up at the bottom of the street or somewhere else with the wind and all. The milkman said he would bring her bread or cakes or sweets, anything, just as long as she throws out the money for him. She said she didn't want his bread or cake, he should just go away and take the empty milk bottles with him while at it, since he was failing to do that too and she had to regularly take them back for him!...
All the while, the next door neighbour was laughing her head off at the whole situation. She told Mrs D, the next morning, how very funny she was, and that her husband slept through the whole drama, while their bed was shaking with her laughter! It's a good one Mrs D! 😄
