Tower Hamlets

Mission

That was an egg-hausting, but a f-root-ful task

2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Tower Hamlets.

Happy Easter fellow goodgymers! This week saw two easter egg filled goodgymers (Axel and Mridula (me)) go over to help out Ms K. Ms K needed to have 3 bushes dug out in her garden so that she can have some new lawn put down.

After arriving a little early at Ms K's house, I stood outside and tried not to look too shifty, whilst I waited for Axel. Axel is another Godgym veteran (over a 150 missions) and also works at the head office as part of the IT team. I was also reliably informed about his reputation as one of the Goodgym speedy runners, and also his legendary beard. Unfortunately his beard had been a bit over hyped, and I was disappointed to see that he was no French Gandalf.

However, none of this had much impact on the task at hand. Ms K needed some deep rooted bushes pulled of her back yard so a new lawn could be laid. After hunting through one of the best organised sheds we had ever seen, we began work. Ms K had kindly bought a saw which allowed us to chop off the larger branches and then focusing on digging and pulling out the roots of the ground.

The roots were very deep in the ground, but armed with a shovel and a spading fork, we began to loosen the soil around the roots and slowly started to remove the roots. We soon realised that swearing in our respective mother tongues, and also making loud grunting noises really helped. The roots were clearly intimidated and released themselves from the ground of their own volition.

We did take a bit of a laissez faire attitude to our Health and Safety and of course we were both taught a lesson as a result. My poorly placed head managed to get hit by a bunch of dirt from Axel's enthusiastic shovelling, and both of us had some near misses from improper sawing. Whilst I giggle at the health and safety lecture at the start of my group runs, it's good to be reminded that you can't really do missions if you injure yourself.

We also had good chat about race motivation, and Axel's Kenya training that has sadly taken him out of the London Marathon race this year. However his speediness qualifies him automatically for 2018. The pedigree of my mission partners is really starting to give me an inferiority complex but it also makes me get some valuable tips to improve my own running which is great.

After an hour we were done but absolutely knackered! We covered up the holes we had made and warned Ms K of where all the holes were and put all the debris from the bushes at the front of Ms. K's house. We did take the opportunity to take some victory shots with the roots we pulled out. I think this is what it would feel like to be a non violent vegetarian viking! Happy Easter and a bientot! Till the next mission!
