Talkin' bout de-fennn-estration

This morning I met up with David to move a bed out of Mrs J's flat.

As per a lot of furniture moving missions, we were to remove this bed to enable a hospital bed to be inserted in its place, allowing Mrs J to be released from hospital early.

Although I'd hoped that this would be a relatively straightforward task, the last email we'd had about this mission warned us that we may need tools to dismantle the bed (which may or may not be available). I took along my trusty screwdriver and trusted to fate.

Fate was not kind to us today.

On arrival, we were let into Mrs J's property by a warden, who also indicated the bed and a mattress that we were to remove from the house. We quickly took the mattress outside and assessed the bed situation we found ourselves in.

My trusty screwdriver allowed us (David) to start unscrewing the slats of the bed. However before he'd gone too far, he realised that the fastener holding the headboard to the base appeared to have a blind opening, meaning we'd need some specialised tool to open it (something more than my trusty screwdriver at any rate). He reattached the slats and we attempted to eject the bed from the room by some other means.

First we attempted carrying it out through the door. This was a bit of a no-go, as the angles just weren't in our favour today (it was more the short hallway that didn't want to bend to our will).

Second, we contemplated a window, as David had recently had success in furniture removal this way (I believe a balcony was also involved?!). This was definitely a no-go, so after briefly talking about defenestration and his previous mission, we didn't even pretend to try it.

All ingress/egress points considered, we decided to at least try to make sure that the bed used up relatively little room by making it do a handstand/bedstand in the corner (after making sure that there were enough power points and enough space for a hospital bed closer to the window).

We ran the setup past the warden who, after reassuring herself that the bed can still be dismantled (when the right tools are available), gave it the ok.

Although we weren't able to fully remove the bed, at least the space made should enable a hospital bed to be put in so that Mrs J can be released home soon! ☺️
