Join us at the Brighton & Hove Stand Up to Racism March this Saturday, 18th October! ✊🏽

This week, I found out through the Stand Up to Racism Brighton WhatsApp group that someone had carved a swastika onto a tree in Stanmer Park. Messages in the group showed how worried people were — they planned to report it to the council.

As a Muslim and Palestinian, I thought about how upsetting it would be for someone of Jewish background, perhaps with links to the Holocaust, to see such a hateful symbol while out walking their dog. I felt that, as a community, we also have a duty to take positive action where we can.

So, I hopped on a train to Falmer, found the tree, and covered the swastika with a red heart. What was once a sign of hate now shines as a symbol of love and unity. 💔➡️❤️

Brighton & Hove is a place of compassion, diversity, and solidarity. We reject racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate.

I encourage all GoodGym members to take their own small actions to stand up against racism — whether that’s speaking out, helping to remove hateful graffiti, or supporting those affected — and to share it on the GoodGym website as a self-deed. Together, we can keep spreading love where hate once stood. ❤️💪
