Report written by Kate Holmes
Today 5 runners ran to represent Goodgym at Richmond Borough's climate change summit. We arrived at 11am, running & walking from our various locations, to set out our stall in the lovely York House.
With Goodgym banners, leaflets and photographs we soon made our area look inviting but you couldn't miss us anyway as we were the only ones in uniform (apart from one Friends of the Earth t-shirt) We were stationed next to the Friends of Ham Lands table, so it was nice to be able to have a chat with two of their volunteers and share a bit of mutual appreciation for what each other do.
At 11.45 people began to arrive. We spent the next hour talking with whoever passed by our table, telling them about goodgym and the many ways people can get involved. It was interesting seeing the variety of responses we got: those who knew of us already and those who didn't, those who wanted to run with us & those who definitely didn't! We learned to change our tact with those people and see if they might know charities or coaches we could help, which proved quite fruitful.
We had lots of interesting discussions with people about how volunteering/exercising outdoors are great ways of helping to engage people with their local environment. We received a lot of positivity in response to what we do, which is always nice!
Just past 1 o'clock, the participants were called, as the workshops were about to begin. So we packed up our wares & headed back out into the bright & blustery autumnal afternoon to run walk or jog our routes home.
