26 people run 6k, weeded, spread mulch, taste tested some organic gym balls, played (safely) with sparklers, and made a fire...phew

5th November- bonfire night. Most traditional bonfire fire night celebrations involve big crowds, cold hands and feet and sore necks from craning your neck. But not for those who came along to GoodGym Camden this week. On top of all those things this is what we enjoyed.

1. Toffee Apples

Well not quite, but we were working in Kings Cross Community Orchard, where a wide variety of apples are grown. Our friend Alex coordinates a host of brilliant projects here on Camley Street. The Orchard Project grow fruit trees here. There is an Eco Park where community food growing groups can access compost, and there permaculture courses being run for the benefit of local residents interested in growing their own food.

Alex needed some help in the orchard, as pesky weeds were starting to surround the base of trees- sucking up water and important nutrients from the soil. It was our job to pull these weeds, lay a sheet of cardboard round the base of the trees and cover it all in compost. The should hold them at bay for a while.

2. Fireworks and a bonfire

It wouldn't be November 5th without fireworks and bonfire, and fortunately we were had both. The residents Maiden Lane treated us to a lovely display as we worked, and we produced our own little neon light show as Pritesh kindly brought along some sparklers for everyone to play with. To top it off we made our own bonfire by collecting loads of fallen branches and burning them at the back of the estate. All with Alex's permission of course!

3. Sweet Treats

As well as facilitating various community projects from the site Alex runs a wholefood business- Alara wholefoods, one of the first certified Organic companies in the UK. Alex likes to share the produce, and wanted to see what we made of his new product- organic raw gym balls! Made from Beetroot and guarana these tasty little things are great recovery food after a hard run. We all think they will be a winner- I had about 3! He also gave us all a box of his delicious muesli to take home. Thanks Alex

4. A run

It's not your typical Bonfire night activity, but it's what we do innit! We had a nice run back- with some people pushing themselves with an extra few loops of granary square to really get the pulse racing. Nice work.
