Southwark News

  • GoodGym Southwark does Earth Hour! Next Saturday 30th March spread woodchip at Surrey Docks Farm for Earth Hour. Find out more and sign up here.

  • Next week we're going to Nunhead Salvation Army for the first time ever! They've got a hell of a lot of sorting to do. It's less than 2km round trip woo! It'll also be Beth's last run with us so we'll be toasting her afterwards. Find out more and sign up here.

  • Last night was Katie's last run as Lambeth leader - she' off to have a wee'un! She wrote a beautiful run report that captures so much of why we love GoodGym. Get the tissues out - you can read it here.

  • 350 miles training miles down, many more to go! Katie is running Brighton Marathon on 14 April for arts and mental health. Empty your pockets and piggy banks, and donate any spare change to support Artsadmin and the Samaritans: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/KatieRunsAMarathon

That's enough of the business

Last night 11 runners gathered at Old Spike Roastery to run the 3.5km to Galleywall Nature Reserve and back. After a briefing we left out into the night, chatting as we went.

Shoutout to Shoko who joined us for the first time last night!

On arrival we were greeted by the lovely Christine (and her kids!) who showed us what needed doing:

  • Sawing up logs to a specific length for the bug wall

  • Weeding and clearing an area and then planting trees

We got stuck right in, it certainly was a physical task! All four trees got planted in record time and the bug wall is looking more hospitable to bugs by the second. Apparently in summer it'll be alive with them - we can't wait to come back on a lighter evening! Having put our muscles to excellent use it was time to wrap up - tools down and get ready to leave. As we were preparing to take our group photo, Christine called over that she'd made us all lemonbalm bouquets to take home with us. Apparently it's great in tea and also for keeping moths at bay.

GoodGym Southwark - the gift that keeps on giving

We took our bouquets and our team photo, thanked Christine profusely for having us and ran off to get home. An excellent run and task tonight. Looking forward to our new task next week!

Emily's off for three weeks on a rickshaw adventure in Sri Lanka!

See you next week, Lucy

The Galleywall Nature Reserve is a small plot of land which has been owned by Southwark Housing for decades. It was used by the adjacent Galleywall School for some time before the school closed. It has been maintained by a group of volunteers, the Friends of Galleywall Nature Reserve, since 2004, under an ongoing long-term agreement with the council.
