Getting there

For this session we're going to meet at the task, so you'll need to make your own way there. We encourage you to walk, run, or cycle to do so!

    About this session

We return to pretty Columbia Road for another fantastic gardening workout!

Tonight's activity: Everything you need to know

    • We will be meeting with Ed and other members of the Columbia TRA to help with a variety of gardening tasks around the Columbia Road estates tonight.

    • We will be divided into groups and tasks may include distributing woodchip; watering trees and shrubs, and weeding.

    • We will be working all over the Estate, heading to different areas of these lovely gardens.

    • We will be meeting at Sivill House at 7pm. The address is Sivill House, Columbia Road, Bethnal Green, E2 7PH.

    Background to the task

The Columbia Road Estates are home to many residents, many of whom don't have gardens. By working together, along with TH Council, residents are aiming to create gardens that can be used and enjoyed by all residents.

Fruit trees and herbaceous borders have been planted; cherry trees have been donated and planted, and an irrigation hose installed into one of the front gardens (FYI: an irrigation hose allows water to head directly into the soil, using less water and ending up more effective for trees and plants).

Residents are aiming to: support the council in making the gardens appealing and usable to all residents; slowly start growing food for all residents to enjoy; keep the habitat of insects and other wildlife in tact.

    This task supports
    Columbia Tenants and Residents Association
Community gardening in estates neighbouring Columbia Road, East London

‘Columbia TRA work to provide ways for more residents to grow on our estates; to improve environmental awareness and sustainability; to get outdoors and make new friends in our community.’ ‘With so many of us not having a garden of our own, getting in touch with nature is more precious than ever. We want to make Columbia Road bloom seven days a week, not just on Sundays!’
