Getting there

For this session we're going to meet at the task, so you'll need to make your own way there. We encourage you to walk, run, or cycle to do so!

    About this session

Cleveland Pools is the country's oldest open air swimming pool. It opened in 1815 and was hugely popular until competition from Bath Sports and Leisure Centre led to its closure in 1984.

The need for a venue for outdoor swimming and a desire to save the historic buildings led to a major campaign to save it. It was successful and the baths reopened in September 2023 only for flooding in January 2024 to damage the plant machinery and main pool.

It has been closed ever since but volunteers have been allowed back on site to tidy up - bringing hope that the pools could be back in use at some point.

That's where GoodGym comes in. We helped out at Cleveland Pools before it reopened in 2023 - and now we are keeping it neat and tidy.

Jobs include clearing weeds, sweeping up leaves from the children's pool, washing down walls, ironmongery, doorways to changing cubicles and the ground floor areas inside the cottage, cleaning the terrace kitchen, the interpretation room, and the communal WCs that have suffered flood detritus.

Please bring gloves - other equipment will be provided.

Extra risks to be aware of: Take care on steep slippery slopes, paths, uneven surfaces and where there are trip hazards. There is the potential of falling into the pools. A step ladder may be used in the children's pool, which may be slippery. Watch out for dog/animal waste and advise others. Be careful when using tools and return them safely after use. Note: The entrance to the Pools is between two houses on Hampton Row. The path is quite narrow and leads to a very steep slope.
