Ms G was mostly prepared for Kash and Sevan's visit to make her flat safer to walk around. She handed over 4 light bulb boxes and walking around the flat, Ms G pointed out 4 light bulbs that weren't working.

As usual, things weren't as straightforward as they seemed. Ms G thought that the GoodGymers would bring a stepladder, so didn't have her own to reach the light fittings set into high ceilings. Luckily, Ms G had a chair tall enough for Kash to reach most of the pendant lights and Sevan to reach the ceiling.

The next problem to solve was that, after removing all of the bulbs to be replaced, the 4 outgoing bulbs didn't match the fitting types on the boxes that Ms G had handed Kash and Sevan. There was 1 screw and 3 bayonets being removed, with 2 screw and 2 bayonet boxes to replace them with. One of the boxes was a bit light though and, looking inside, Sevan found a length of electrical cable and 2 fuses. No light bulb.

Kash and Sevan changed the bulbs that they could. Kash then set off for the local shops to find some more light bulbs, where she found an off licence and a Polish shop to browse around.

While Sevan was waiting, he investigated a loose cable in Ms G's bedroom that had been reported as a trip hazard. It stretched from the bedside light on a table to a plug socket on the opposite side of the room. The 2 sockets near the bed had adaptors plugged into them and after a bit of investigation, it turned out that one was for an old cordless phone that Ms G no longer used. A quick plug switch later, the trailing cord was gone.

Kash returned with a selection of light bulbs. A standard bulb with a screw fitting and 2 bayonets, one a candle bulb and the other a really wide "UFO" shape which was hard to get into the pendant fittings. Eventually, a home was found for each bulb and all 4 of the problematic lights were working, so Ms G could navigate her home safely during the dark mornings and nights of winter.

What changed in the GoodGymers? Well, there were some learnings:

  1. Always carry a step ladder. You never know when it'll come in handy
  2. When handed a light bulb box, check that there's a real bulb in it
  3. Hanger Lane Gyratory isn't a good place to buy regular light bulbs
  4. You can't always speak Polish in a Polski Sklep
