Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Last night, a top crew of local Goodgymmers (including first timers Tom and Sophie- welcome!) joined us at Thornhill Square Gardens for a pleasant summers evening of garden renovation. Anna, the local volunteer coordinator met us at the gates of the park (surrounded by happy families and friends enjoying the sun) with wheelbarrows, rakes, hoes, clippers and shovels in hand.
We divided our team up into smaller groups to conquer the task- Andrew, Mali and John jumped on the chance to do some classic mushroom compost shoveling and wheelbarrowing. Katriona and Steve helped with clearing some overgrown weeds and shrubs from the very healthy looking plant beds in the middle of the park. These particular community beds had been cordoned off with wire mesh to keep the wild flowers safe from the public (and to attract loads and loads of bees! They were everywhere!), so we had to lift the compost over the fencing to spread across the beds.
Tom, Caitlin and Sophie took charge of clearing the main pathways into the park of green waste, and weeded the paving slabs and walls as best they could. Between us, we had gathered up along of excess grass and greenery, so we took it in turns to add the trimmings and clippings into the community compost bin.
Anna was thrilled with the progress we had made over the course of an hour. She even posted an appreciative Thank You message on the Thornhill Square Gardens instagram account:

'A quiet oasis off Caledonian Road. Plenty of space (it is the largest square in Islington) to picnic, rest, read, admire the flowers shrubs and trees, and walk a dog. Volunteers, with the council are working to encourage healthy activities, including walking and yoga, and also to improve the diversity of wildlife in the park.'
