Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Paul B (he, him, me duck)
It was not a one man Shakespearean comedy show that played out in Deptford, but a saga that left a man in a wheelchair hugging a loaf of bread. I knew the community centre where the food bank was and arrived just before the opening time. Inside there was a Mother and Baby group, but no food bank, I was told by the women that they hadn’t seen it for a while but to check with the office upstairs who confirmed its departure,
I didn’t want to leave Mr N without food so I rang the referrer, Community Connections, to see if they could suggest anything else. Alas, nothing until this evening in a different part of the Borough. They gave me details of a number within Social Services to call if he hadn’t got any food over the weekend.
I spoke to Mr N ,he’d got no food and sounded quite desperate and I was worried about the Social Services plan. So I bought him enough to keep him going until Monday on Deptford High Street and took it round to his flat in a sheltered scheme.
I have never seen anyone so happy to get a loaf of bread (amongst other things) He hugged it, and tears streamed down both our faces.
The lovely Mr N will ring Community Connections this afternoon to try to sort out something for next week.
