Chip off the old block

Coventry Report written by Laura Denham

Last night we had 14 GoodGymers all set for action. We managed to just dodge the downpour and half of us tackled a sweaty run over to the allotments on what ended up being a very warm evening. Turns out I totally underestimated the distance but everyone smashed it.

When the runners arrived, the early birds (who had made there own way there) were already in full swing with Nigel, Graeme, Chris, Claire and James moving bark chippings with wheelbarrows, Jackie on the spreading and Sharon and Steve weeding around the mud kitchen area.

The runners joined in with Chloe, Georgia, Vani and Laura jumping right into the weeding and Dale on bush trimming duties. Before we knew it the communal area was prepped with bark chippings, the beds clear from weeds and the hedge looking neat, all set for their allotment BBQ next week.

With the runners needing to hit the road again we capped it off with a group snap (not snack - ha!) and made our way back to base. A few stayed longer to wrap things up with James and Steve dedicated to completing the brick base for the wormery before the clock ran out.

Fantastic work everyone, Gareth has messaged me this morning to thank you all lots and to say how great you have left the allotments looking. Nice one!

Next week we are gearing up for a rounders game! It might have been a while since some of you played but it should be a great opportunity to stay active and have a great time together (and this time i will be bringing snacks!). If you are not up for playing you can always come for the social, have a chat, help set up and maybe keep score? Hope to see you all there!

We CAN do it!

Coventry Report written by Laura Denham

Fantastic turn out for our visit to Carriers of Hope this evening, love it!

We welcomed Anna, Anirudh, Nidhi for their first session and good to see you back for more Stuart :) Also hats off to Sharon and Steve for joining us on their anniversary!

There was a lot to be done tonight, and with only a few volunteers these tasks would seem daunting. However, with 16 of us contributing and working together seamlessly we once again demonstrated that teamwork makes the dreamwork.

Anna, Anirudh, Nidhi, Sharon, Georgia and Steve ascended to the baby item haven, curating adorable baby care packages. Maddie and Beverley took charge at the toiletry station skillfully packaging delightful smellies and bathroom must-haves all set to bring a touch of comfort to those who need them. Natasha and Stuart showcased their masterful bagging skills, filling the trolly's with bags of toilet rolls. Meanwhile Laura James, Tom, Dale and Chloe engaged in the meticulous task of organising tin cans, flexing their mental muscles as they counted stock and ensured items were within the expiry date. Simultaneously, they efficiently transported items to the toiletry station as needed.

During our volunteering marathon we paused for a delightful break savouring jam on toast tea and biscuits which sweetened the experience.

Amazing work everyone you have all done such a fantastic job of helping to get the warehouse in order and making the regular volunteers daily work easier by preparing all these packages.

Next week we will be leafleting for Myton followed by a curry to celebrate GG Cov turning 5. If you haven't signed up please do so by Wednesday 6th March so I can book a table.

Soil survivors

Coventry Report written by Laura Denham

Welcome to new GoodGymer Stuart! Great to meet you and welcome to the gang. We also welcomed back Tom this eve on his second good deed :)

Great turn out tonight with 13 heroes showing up in full force eager to 'muck in' shifting soil at Foleshill Library. Coventry Peace House are helping the library to revive the unloved garden which sadly is unused. They would like to create a community garden that everyone can enjoy.

To begin the revamp the task owner required 4 large bags of topsoil to be moved from the public pathway around to the back garden. There was no messing, everyone got stuck in straight away, shoveling soil into wheelbarrows then wheeling the barrows around and emptying the soil into the garden area. Tom and Laura were waiting with spades at the ready to spread the soil over the grassy section. Chloe meanwhile was working on the edges with her secateurs, trimming back the brambles and weed.

Very impressive how everyone found their roles and worked so well together, getting the job done in no time. It was finished that quick there was even time for us to do a double deed and get some litter picking done :) We didn't even go to the end of the street and we had filled 4 bin bags! We also passed lots of fly tipping which Laura documented ready to notify the council.

As usual you all did fantastic tonight and the task owner was really pleased.

Lots more to be done on the library garden still so watch out for more dates coming soon :)
