Bin there, sieved that

Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Last night was our second ever trip down to Thrive therapy garden in Battersea Park. This lovely area in the middle of the busy park is an oasis of clam designed to support people with disability and ill health through gardening. It's a large space and runs as a charity, so they've asked to come down and help with various jobs from time to time.

With a feeling of changing seasons, we kicked off the session with a heart-rate raising warm up and a quick discussion about our favourite subject at school. We had most bases covered, with history, geography, drama, art and maths all making the cut. As we said, we have the makings of a good, well-rounded pub quiz team there!

After a run down tot he park we arrived at the garden and got stuck into the list of jobs we had been given (after cracking the crystal maze style lock system!). While Annabel and Alice started on the weeding, Lorna and Jordan tackled the increasing pies of leaves, while Steph, Jo and Becky got their hands dirty in the compost bins - thankfully disturbing no toads this time!

After 45 minutes of hard work we had made some good progress, so with the light fading, there was just time for a run home. We are jam-packed full of exciting missions coming up including these two lunchtime runs to help deliver information packs to Wandsworth GP surgeries to spread the word about support for young trans and LGBT+ people on a thursday and on a Friday, as well as our regular Friday lunchtime service a homeless support centre. Our run next Monday will be taking place as normal, and we will be sanding down benches at a community garden. Watch out for the upcoming Halloween run and social, and we also discussed doing a mission to collect fruit such as crabapples on local trees which is currently being wasted - if you ahve any ideas about how we can do this or would like to help organise it, just let me know!

In the pink

Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

With a painting job lined up for the evening, it was a case of all eyes on the weather forecast and an afternoon of will it/won't it finally rain?

The aim was to do more of the painting at Paradise Cooperative garden, a space that has been transformed from derelict land to a lush community garden opposite Wandsworth Prison. We had made a great start on the shed last week, but there was still plenty more to be done.

So after a warm up where we also welcomed Emily to her first group run (give her a cheer!) followed by a warm and sticky run down to the garden (and another slight pause to cool off under the nearby gardening centre's sprinkler system) we arrived to find, amongst other things, an unfeasibly tall sunflower and a tin of excellent pink paint.

So, with the rain still holding off, we got cracking with the two sheds. Before long we could really see the difference, and we had very very almost finished the job when it was time to leave - and just as it started to drizzle. Which was probably good news for both the plants and our overheated bodies!

Next week we'll be heading down to Battersea Park to help out in the therapy garden ( just waiting for final confirmation) but don't forget about the weekly Friday lunchtime mission we have helping serve lunch at a local centre for the homeless. Have a very happy week all!

Black to the future

Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

What could be better than a spot of painting on a summer's evening? Last night GoodGym Wandsworth enjoyed just that, soaking up the last of the sun in the beautiful Paradise Cooperative Garden while giving the shed a lick of paint.

We started off the night at our usual meeting spot to do a warm up. Given it was International Cat day we also went round the group and named our pets of past and present, which featured tortoises, cats, rats and of course a pup or two!

A steady run later we found ourselves finishing off through a lovely cooling and very welcome shower courtesy of the local garden centre. Refreshed, we stepped into the garden to find it had shot up in the weeks since we'd been there last. The sweetcorn towered over us all, and we spotted huge marrows, a lovely bean arch and flowers as far as we could see. It was a beautiful place to do our job, and we got stuck into sanding down the tool shed straight away.

Next stage was the actual painting, and we were a little concerned that although it looked black, it was initially going on a rather patchy shade of something that looked quite different! There was a lot of talk about 60 Second Makeover, the newly-returned Changing Rooms and that faux leather wall paper. Nonetheless we persevered, and along with redecorating ourselves, the shed started to quickly look pretty smart.

Have a look at the before and after for a proper transformation! And we're not stopping there either - next week we're back to paint the community area which promises to be another big but very rewarding job. Until then, have a lovely week and happy GoodGyming!

Go on and cake my day

Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Last night 15 GoodGymers came together to celebrate SIX whole years of GoodGym Wandsworth! In that time we have achieved huge things together. Can you believe we have clocked up:

  • 8456 good deeds done by 1109 runners

  • 634 Missions to help older people

  • 533 Group sessions to help community projects

  • 711 Coach visits to an older person

  • 118401 kms run

  • 45729 cheers given

What an amazing legacy...so far! Well done to each and everyone of you who has been a part of it.

We kicked off the evening with a warm up and we were very happy to welcome Amy to her first session - give her a cheer!

Last night's task was at a local community centre where we were replanting flowers that had been donated by Wimbledon Tennis charitable foundation. But first there was a spot of digging to do. Well, that's what we thought at first. It didn't take long for us to realise that the area where we were going to be doing the planting was filled with some rather stubborn roots. However, we were not to be defeated and after some epic battles we were victorious over some of the biggest and toughest roots in Wandsworth.

It wouldn't be a GG Wandsworth party without a bit of compost, so true to form, we shifted and spread many bags of the stuff ready for the plants, some of which looked like they were more than ready to find a new home!

Next came the creative part, and with several of us assuming art director roles we began designing the new bed. Alan Titchmarsh would be proud - check out some of those before and after shots to see the massive difference.

Job done, and it was time for Chi to put the group through their paces with a short but hard core fitness session- although there may have been a relaxed attitude towards the timings (!), it was an effective all over body session which meant everybody was ready for the post-task celebration. And what a celebration it was! Hadas, who runs the Waste Not Want Not charity put on the most incredible spread, with a huge BBQ of jerk chicken, as well as loads of other goodies. There was also some incredible baked goods created by you lovely lot, including an amazing cake made by Catherine.

It's such a pleasure to run with you all, and to see the amazing way you make things happen for the better across the borough and beyond. A very happy birthday to each and every one of you and here's to many more years of GoodGym Wandsworth!

Weeding our way out of bind!

Report written by Jonathan (he/him)

A muggy yet sunny day saw five GoodGymmers came together to help in the never ending battle against bind weed, which grew rampant over trees and bushes in parts of the Fulham Palace Gardens.

Setting about our work, we made our way up the beds, dodging sprinklers and nettles to get rid of the pesky invaders, enjoying a few blackberries that grew in the area. We also got to see some of the beds we had worked on earlier in the year, where a greater diversity of flowers and plants had grown as good sources of nectar and cover for many a small critter.

Afterwards, we grabbed a quick coffee/ cool drink from the Fulham Palace cafe and slowly put the world to rights as per usual before going to enjoy the rest of our weekends.
