St Peter-in-the-Forest Community Centre & Church

A place to bring local communities together and improve natural environment for wildlife
Since November 2019, we have been in rebuild mode. We were blessed to receive a large grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund of money raised from National Lottery players right across the country. This will help renovate and reorder our church building as part of our major five-year activity plan. When the dust settles we are not going to slow down: our church will become a busy centre for community arts, community gardening, community cooking, and community history. Whoever you are and whatever your story is, you will find a place with us in our corner of Epping Forest.

15 GoodGymers have supported St Peter-in-the-Forest Community Centre & Church with 9 tasks.

Trim Thy Bush

Wednesday 8th June 2022

Written by Redbridge runner

Such a lovely evening to spend an hour in such a nice community garden surrounded by trees!

Charlotte and I decided to have an upper body workout by grabbing some shears and getting down to some bush trimming!

We discussed some shapes we could do and contemplated some naughty attempts but in the end settled on a heart and a globe!

Great way to spend a sunny evening!

Rake it until you make it!

What a lovely evening for this week's task!!!

Charlotte, Tony and Julia met in the churchyard and after initial faffing with getting the keys Julia opened up the storage room to get the tools and summer bulbs.

We were planting these alongside a fence by the road so that the flowers can provide a splash of colours for passers by in the future.

Soon after Saj and Ray arrived and also got stuck in with the planting.

After half an hour we moved onto the second (improvised) task of clearing the Greem Alkanet which whilst looks pretty can really take over the land! This was a very satisfying task and Ray really got into his raking with great clearing results!

Well done to everyone for coming along - great social banter as usual!

Warm Windy Wander in Walthamstow

Wednesday 16th February 2022

Super mild evening jogging around and weeding!

We all met up at Greenleaf Rd with a bit of a pre-run catch up. It was lovely to welcome Matthew back after work and child-duties have been keeping him away for a while! Great to see you back Matthew!:)

We started with a warm-up and then had an easy jog of aproximately 2.3km to St Peters. On arrival we were looking out for Ama and were a little bit worried she wasn't there but it turns out Ama let me know well in advance, if only I checked my emails:)

Our task today was pulling off ivy off gravestones - that ivy was gripped very strongly and it can really damage the gravestones! We picked a little area at the back and had an enjoyable 30-40mins bantering away and clearing the gravestones. In all that jolly I forgot to take the photos of the group so I improvised - what do you reckon?;)

The jog back was also really nice as the weather continued to be really mild and rain-free. We got to the church and had a thorough stretch down, including a 'controversial' behind the back arm stretch - come along next time to find out what it is!:)

Don't forget to sign up to next week's gardening task and a post-weeding social!

Shear Delights at St Peter's-in-the-Forest

Saturday 12th February 2022

Written by Tony

Glorious day at St Peter's where Tony and Lauren fought to free another grave from the verdant bramble and ivy tentacles ensnaring it.

A good hour's work in a lovely, peaceful space. Big thanks to Frances - Church Warden - for providing access to the tool shed. Would have been a lot harder without the shears!

Better the gravel you know

Wednesday 1st December 2021

Written by Redbridge runner

We met at the Greenleaf Rd church with everyone arriving promply except me (rolls her eyes at herself)! We waited a bit for others but with late cancellations and a no-show it was the awesome foursome that ended up running in the cold dark night!

Welcome to Rebecca!

This was Rebecca's first run in Waltham Forest as she recently moved into the area - a very warm welcome Rebecca, great to have you!

Running up the hill

We chose a straight route to St Peter in the forest but that meant a few uphill runs that felt rather hard! But we were determined so quickly arrived at the churchyard and got to work!

Gravelling Up

Ramon and Rebecca were in charge of putting down the weed suppressant and pinning it down and they did a great job! In the meantime myself and Tony (ok mostly Tony...:)) were wheelbarrowing the bags of gravel from the top of the churchyard (a tough arm workout with deflated wheelbarrow wheels!)!

Long run back

Energised and slightly chilled we decided to do a long run back (Ramon's shortcut;)) with Rebecca and Ramon leaving towards on the way home so Tony and I made a night of it but running the longer way, getting lost on the way once or twice, and making it a 6km run kind of evening!

Until next time!
