Not slow in Bow

Saturday 30th October 2021

Written by John Shirley

It took Joel and John less than half an hour to complete this task, which was to tidy up after Bow Community Day, held at St Paul Old Ford. We made quick work of cleaning and disinfecting tables, taking down bunting, tidying up rubbish, clearing away electrical equipment and generally returning the hall to how it looked before.

Task owner Rosie was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to summon help using the GoodGym form, and will no doubt call on our services again.

Good Will Bunting

Saturday 30th October 2021

Written by Leo

Jo, Beth and I arrived promptly at midday at St Paul Old Ford to meet Rosie and the team and get underway preparations to ensure the Bow Community Day was all set in an hour's time.

Initially we were assembling collapsible tables for the various stalls and then rearranging the cafe area to make it look more "cafe-like".

Once we were suitably happy with our efforts it was all about the promotion. Jo was on poster duty putting them up all around the entrance and Beth and I picked up various lengths of bunting to adorn the front of the church, which offered some fun logistical challenges but ultimately ended up very successfully.

It did look most inviting once we were done and as we wrapped up at 1pm on the dot people were already starting to stream in, intrigued as to what the event had to offer.

A few hours later John and Joel were back to help dismantle and by all accounts did a great job too!

A Christmas Eve reprieve

Thursday 24th December 2020

Written by Stephen Tolfree

Twas Christmas Eve and we were back at the Bromley by Bow food bank helping organise the centre. Beth was full of Christmas hope as she wrapped up individual soaps. Ceiling didn't want to risk it so organized the biscuits. John loves holly so moved all the trolleys. Sree felt it was too early for a Christmas detox so she collected all the empty boxes. Stephen contemplated on Jesus's creation as the sorted out a generous donation.

The Afternoon Gift-Shift

Wednesday 16th December 2020

Written by Rosa

Ivy and I had the pleasure of wrapping presents on the afternoon shift at the Bromley by Bow Centre today along with several other merry volunteers. The centre have received 500 donated presents from large corporates in the City today, and are expecting another 500 tomorrow, so they were very grateful for GoodGym's help! All presents will go to local children via the centre so it was a very heartwarming mid-week mission, along with a festive radio soundtrack and some nostalgia spotting classic childhood toys.

The Toyhouse Toothbrush Fitness Challenge

Tuesday 15th December 2020

Written by Emdad Rahman

So along with a handful of GoodGymmers I chose to accept the latest mission for a midday run, discreetly leaving my workstation, changing into that Royal Red shirt and heading off to the Bromley by Bow Centre to meet Kate for today’s assignment.

The mission, which we chose to accept entailed picking up and dropping a special consignment of toothbrushes and toys.

The success of this highly cloak and dagger operation was due to changing course, switching from car, to cycle, and walking, in order to lose anyone tracking monitoring.

I met some fellow Reds at Bromley by Bow Centre and after having a quick chat and sharing a few snaps with Kate we went our ways.

We delivered toothbrushes and cute finger puppets to the Toyhouse Centre, which has been supporting children and their parents for 40 years.

It’s marvellous how a simple community mission unites the people

I took my time and finished a little after Tooth Hurty pm.

I’m sure team mates will return to their work stations a little rouge in the face whilst proclaiming, “Wow! Who knew a trip to Tesco Local for a lunch deal was such a sweat?”

Take a Bow Foodbank

Thursday 10th December 2020

Written by Alex Dray (he / him)

In the first of a series of weekly delivery unloading tasks at the Bromley-By-Bow Community Centre, 6 dedicated goodgymers rose to their challenge and switched up their monotonous gym routines to help the amaazing Kate with her weekly delivery for the Bow foodbank, to help the foodbank prepare to support their community on Monday.

Big shout out and warm welcome to Gloria on her first ever community mission!

Another big shout out and round of applause also to Siobhan for her second mission (having supported the wonderul St Hildas staff, but without actually meeting other goodgymers the previous week)

Thanks also to Katrin for joining the Foodbank for the first time. Currently sitting 2nd overall in the whole of Goodgym for good deeds this month - incredible commitment for some great causes.

Last but by all no means least, massive kudos to task regulars Ivy, Jacqui and of course, Ceiling for joining Kate and I again. Its no mean feat to cotninue sacrtificng your time to travel to these tasks: often a long journey & filling in to take photos (Jacqui!), directly from other previous tasks the same day (Ceiling!) and consistently helping the same project Ivy, who has not missed a single task and the Bow Foodbank yet). You guys are amazing and you should all be proud of the impact you have had this year and with a smile on your faces every single time.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended, hope to see you and some others at the same time this Thursday :)
