For Amy, joining GoodGym was a way of making friends and getting the know the city where she had moved to for university. Since joining GoodGym Liverpool she has introduced many friends into group runs and even attended a session with her mum when back home at GoodGym Richmond. Read on to hear Amy's GoodGym Story from a University student perspective.

After being offered work experience with GoodGym, I was determined to get involved with GoodGym at University as throughout the placement I saw first-hand what a huge difference GoodGym made to local communities.

Joining something new is always a challenge and throughout the placement I asserted to everyone that I wasn’t a runner, making it an even scarier challenge to go at alone, but nonetheless I was determined to give it a go. On my first group run I was welcomed by all of GoodGym Liverpool as we ran just under 4km to clean a community centre.

That night I made new friends and learned so much that I was previously unaware of about the city I was studying in (Liverpool)! When I got home, I was so inspired that I encouraged three of my housemates to sign up and we all went on the following few runs together, motivating each other to push our limits and go on the longer runs. Despite my attendance over the last year being far from regular due to various University commitments, GoodGym always welcomes me back with open arms on each run I manage to attend.

I am so grateful to GoodGym for taking me out of the University bubble and introducing me to the city I call my second home. Some areas of Liverpool I would never have gone to had it not been for GoodGym. Being part of GoodGym has also enabled me to give back to the city that is giving me a degree, keeping me engaged with the local community that I otherwise wouldn’t have a connection with.

Since joining, I have managed to get three housemates and 15 cheerleaders involved and I aim to introduce GoodGym to more and more students at Liverpool University. It’s a heart-warming thought to know that after University I can continue to be part of a team, keep fit and help the local community. I hope GoodGym Liverpool don’t forget about me following graduation because I will definitely be back up! If you’re a student and you want a challenge, a change, or would simply like to get outside of what University has to offer, I cannot recommend GoodGym enough. It is life changing and after each run you feel like an absolute hero. GoodGym Liverpool have come leaps and bounds since I joined in September 2018 and it is so nice to see the group of runners develop and grow and be part of such an amazing team!
