We certainly did our Fareshare of van cleaning tonight!

Bristol Report written by Paul Becker (he/him)

38 Goodgymers, 9 Fareshare team members and 3 vans made for a great night earlier as our two organisations got together for a joint van cleaning and fitness session at the Fareshare South West warehouse in St Judes.

We paused briefly on our way out to congratulate Chris on his BOSS New Balance publicity shot and recent Men's Health article written as he targets his very first marathon in London. Now when Chris sets his mind to a task he is certainly a man to be reckoned with (as anyone who's seen him wield a mattock will testify) so we know he's totally got this - go Chris!

At the warehouse we were met by Phoebe who explained how Fareshare take surplus donated food and redistribute it to charities and community groups like children's clubs, homeless hostels and refuges. To do this they make use of three vans that were parked outside and one of our tasks for the night was to give them a thorough clean inside and out.

We were also introduced to the 9 members of the Fareshare South West who had joined us tonight to participate in a bit of fitness and help with preparations for the Bristol 10k in May. Fareshare is putting together a team to raise money for their organisation - and they invited anyone else who is running to join them too!

Now 47 pairs of hands is an awful lot to throw at 3 vans in one go so we split into three groups and rotated every 10 minutes between the van cleaning, a canny session of the popular warehouse fitness game Pulse Squats lottery and a Riverside park run and lunge fest brilliantly led three times in succession by Jack with only 5 minutes notice. By the end of the evening, the vans were vibrant and hopefully the quads were suitably quaking.

Thanks so much to all at Fareshare for making us so welcome and joining in with such enthusiasm - you all rock and deserve to take the 10K by storm!

Thanks also to Charlie for some fantastic photos of the tasks, to the chap at Fareshare who took such an amazing group shot (sorry I didn't get your name!) and to Dave for fab back marking. And thanks also to Emma for the pun :)

And of course massive congratulations to Jenny on her first group run since hitting 50 good deeds - sorry I didn't announce it tonight but we'll rectify that next time :)

Sand and deliver!

Bristol Report written by Paul Becker (he/him)

Tonight we were on a mission to spread the word about missions as most of us headed off to Victoria park to deliver GG mission leaflets to the surrounding houses. Hopefully this will mean more elderly people will learn about all the fabulous DBS-checked Goodgym volunteers ready and waiting to come and sort out their gardens or help with other manual tasks around the house.

Since we also still had a few leaflets left from promoting the Emmaus warehouse sale last week, we took the opportunity to drop the rest of those off as well so a double dose of good delivered already.

But we didn't stop there. A small team were also dispatched to Kuumba community centre to help out with some sanding. The Kuumba community centre in St Pauls runs a wide range of activities and events including live events and workshops where you can learn about African dance, music, drama and literature. The term 'Kuumba' is Swahili suggesting Creativity.

I was expecting our task to be a few upstairs doors, but it turned out to be the main stage. This is good news as Nwanyi had explained to me that the edges of the stage had become a little splintered and risked hurting the feet of some of the dancers who perform there.

Finally we all returned to Queen Square for some shuttle relay races, and a series of one-minute conditioning exercises led by Matt.

I'll be standing down as GG Bristol trainer in the next few weeks so have a think about whether you would like to take on the role. An email should be going out in the next few days explaining how you can go about applying - feel free to ask me if you have any questions about what's involved

250 deeds - that's Scott to Matt'er!

Bristol Report written by Paul Becker (he/him)

A couple of weeks of loitering round cycle shop parking lots felt wholly worthwhile tonight as the accumulated boxes were once again turned into ingenious beds for the homeless by the massive throng of Goodgym runners who met together in Bristol tonight.

Almost 40 of us (welcome to our first timers Kara, Kathleen and Emma) ran up to our usual workshop location at the United Reformed Church on West Street to meet Elliot the card bed designer. Elliot quickly ran through the essentials of card bed construction - fold before you cut, orientate the templates correctly with the 'grain' of the cardboard for maximum strength .. and don't make too many C's (the template sections are all labeled with a letter and while only one C is required for a bed, we seem to have completed 10 of them in our last workshop!)

The beds are designed to fold flat so they can be easily carried around and stored during the day. At night they slot together to form a strong rigid structure that allows a homeless person to sleep raised above a concrete pavement and both maintain body warmth and benefit from a somewhat softer surface.

We got to quickly down to work, but there were just too many of us to all work on the cutting and folding at the same time so we split into two groups, with one group litter picking around the church while the other assembled beds. Half way through we swapped and managed to also complete some weeding around the church car park. Its great that we were able to help out our hosts in this way as they regularly give us the use of the church free of charge - including turning the heating on for us before we arrive!

As we neared the end of our time in the hall, Elliot assembled a bed for us from the parts we had made. And as is now traditional, we tried it out for size!

After a very busy last few minutes packing the beds and used cardboard away in the car, we ran back to base and celebrated our latest milestone achievements. Liam has reached 50 good deeds and is now the proud owner of a black T shirt, while Matt'erhorn has reached 200 and receives his own personalised shirt as is the custom here in Bristol.

Sarah, our new 100 deeder from Saturday kindly bought vegan cakes and Matt brought pink wafers, so pretty much a perfect evening from my point of view!

Smashed it! With certainly the best after run cake and biscuit selection yet in humble opinion.

Brrr..raking new ground at Full Circle

Bristol Report written by Paul Becker (he/him)

Bit chilly tonight but with 158 deeds on the board and half way to our January target it was nice to see 32 smiling faces warming up and ready to go, especially since among them were several new ones. Welcome Jes, Tom, Lynsey, Melissa, Chris and Lucas. Special mention to GG Bristol recruiter-in-chief Caroline who was again responsible for some of those new faces!

Xanne had warned me that there would be a bit of outdoor work at Emmaus tonight and that consequently we wouldn't need quite so many as usual. This worked out pretty well as we still had some unfinished business at Full Circle so we split the group with one team heading to Emmaus and the other heading round the corner to meet Ann-Marie.

Emmaus helps previously homeless people get back into work by giving them longer term place to live and helping them develop new skills, including PAT testing for companies, performing house clearances and moving large items for elderly or vulnerable people. A couple of the companions also help to organize the warehouse that stores the goods for the Emmaus shops - including one located on the same site.

Charlie headed up the Emmaus group and very soon people were cutting down bushes, sorting clothes and bagging up thorny branches. There was a bit of sharing around of tools but as the before and after photos demonstrate, a large area got cleared by the time we were finished. Sadly, with all that activity there wasn't enough time for the planned reps and Strava segment attempt up Spring Hill - Matt can beat Gazebo next time!

Meanwhile at Full Circle we had moved a number of the planters to one side so we could try the grass matting out for size. There was a bit of debate about which way round it should go but I think we got it right in the end. It was then a matter of taking all the bags of fine gravelly mud and spreading it all evenly over the ground so the mat could go on top.

Once the mat had been put in position and the bench and planters replaced it seemed almost like Summer out there in the garden so we posed for a summery garden picture and headed back to base. Ann-Marie seemed really pleased with the newly improved courtyard - apparently the mat has been waiting for replacement for quite some time.

Once we had returned there was just enough time to congratulate Ian on his 50 good deeds before heading into Vivo to celebrate them with some Pumpkin Spice wafers (thanks Danica) and Ian's home made flapjack!
