CRISIS: The Sunday Session

We pick up where yesterday's Team Saturday left off...

We've been asked to lend a hand both days this weekend. GoodGymers are needed to help with the huge operation of dismantling the warehouse after the Christmas activity. Richard, the Crisis project co-ordinator will be heading up the activity, with Area Activator Laura popping by to check in.

Activity will involve:

  • Stock-taking
  • Redistribution of products and furniture
  • DIY
  • (Richard has specificially said there will be no cleaning!)

You don't need to commit to the entire six hours - we understand it's a long time. Just come for as much as you can.

Health and safety

  • Safety has been carefully considered when allocating these 20 places. Variety of activity combined with the large area of this former bus depot means that distancing will be easy to adhere to.

  • On arrival, sign in on the book to your right as you arrive in the loading bay.

  • Grab a hi-vis vest.

  • Sanitise your hands.

  • Richard will allocate you a task.

  • Face coverings are mandatory when working inside at this task. Please ask Richard for a face covering if you don't have your own on arrival.

Out and About for Elizabeth House

The GG Islington crew met up at Elizabeth House Foodbank on Tuesday afternoon this week to help with a round of deliveries on foot for local households. We had a mix of walkers, runners and cyclists on hand to provide hot lunches, weekly shopping and essential items for families and neighbours in the area.

We were super efficient as a team of 5- making short work of the huge pile of shopping bags and crates prepared for us earlier in the day. Within the hour, everything had been dispatched. Smashing work everyone!

Take time out from makeshift workstations to join this drop-in session.

Come and be part of this end-of-week Community Mission in the vast (111,358 sq ft) Crisis warehouse in Poplar.

KEY FACTS OF THIS COMMUNITY MISSION:

  • The Community Mission window is from 10 - 4. Just come for as much as you can, even if only to say hello during your lunch hour. Richard, the project co-ordinator, understands it's difficult for GoodGymers to give over a whole working day.

  • Tasks may include stock-taking, helping with redistribution.

  • On arrival, complete the sign-in book to your right as you arrive in the loading bay, grab a hi-vis vest, sanitise your hands and wait for Richard to allocate you a task.

  • Face coverings are mandatory when working inside at this task.

  • Please bring your own gloves, and wear plenty of layers as the warehouse gets cold.

items of dubious descendance

After helping to build up and organise the central warehouse for Crisis for Christmas last year, it was now time to help get things in order for the inevitable clearing out - the building will be torn down to build flats...

It is usually best not to go in with any expectations, since it is hard to predict what tasks Richard has in store! Todays list of accomplishments:

  • clearing up lots of chocolate boxes, all empty except for one bar that got 'rescued'
  • sorting through a pallet of crates and put things back where they belong
  • reorganise a series of crates & containers (the big ones on wheels)
  • sort, count & repack the 'activities' section, with tables gathered around the complex

Now regarding the title.... credit to Katrin for this. She was referring to socks looking like Prince William, one pick out of a variety of items we came across, from little bags of pickled onions to tiny pepper & salt shakers and more.

Please give Tina & Tom a cheer for their first & second Goodgym experience respectively! Hope to see you guys again soon.

A fair number of people joined a zoom yoga class. We worked on static and dynamic yoga poses to develop strength, flexibility and focus.

Elizabeth House Foodbank Deliveries

Assisting this awesome project with foot deliveries to local households

The lovely folks at the Elizabeth House Foodbank have invited Goodgym back to help with their ongoing community delivery service. The team were super productive over the festive period, and we are happy to continue their excellent work.

This task is will involve deliveries of food and supplies on foot to local households around Islington. Bringing a substantial rucksack could be useful, but not essential.

Area Activator Simon will be present to help with the running of this session.
