Construction and clearing at Weaver's Adventure Playground!

Sat 24 Apr 11:00 am
Weavers Adventure Playground, Viaduct Street, London, E2 0BH
We're continuing our regular Saturday slot helping prep the playgound for re-opening...

What we'll be doing

  • We're heading back to Weaver's Adventure Playground this weekend for our regular Saturday session to help Alex and Nadia get the playground ready for re-opening.

  • Tasks may include filling skips, helping break up large poles of wood, painting and constructing decking and doors.

What you need to know

  • You will be in a group of 12 for meeting only. Then you will be divided into groups of 2-4 and dispatched to all areas, both inside the grounds (and possibly out) for your tasks.

And let's not forget the report...

  • We're looking for story tellers, pun pros and photographers for the report from this activity. Do feel free to try your hand at crafting the report post Community Mission. And it can be a team effort too!

Need to cancel?

  • We very much hope you'll be able to make it, but if anything changes after you've signed up, please un-sign as soon as possible to free up your place for someone else (we normally have a team of 15-20 at Weavers, but we're reducing numbers at this crucial time). Thank you!

Migrateful: Chinese Socially Distanced Dinner- Cyclists wanted!

Fri 9 Apr 17:30 pm
New Unity, 277A Upper St, Islington, London , N1 2TZ
Sign up to be a delivery cyclist for this innovative community kitchen!

Migrateful runs cookery classes led by refugees, asylum seekers and migrants struggling to integrate and access employment. The cookery classes provide ideal conditions not just for learning English and building confidence, but also for promoting contact and cultural exchange with the wider community.

Due to legal, linguistic and social barriers, finding work can be extremely difficult for many migrants. Being unable to provide for themselves and their families has significant negative effects on self-esteem and mental health.

Migrateful’s mission is to empower and celebrate refugees and vulnerable migrants on their journey to integration, by supporting them to run their own cookery classes.

Every month, Migrateful host a themed dinner by the community chefs working with the charity. In the past, this would be in a large social space where the diners can meet face-to-face. However, during lockdown, the team have set up a "Socially Distanced Dinner", where local volunteer cyclists deliver meals to the diners instead.

If you are interested in getting involved, please follow these instructions:

Please fill out this doodle poll: https://doodle.com/poll/ey3gm396vskurpqq.

We are in need of 25-30 volunteers so please spread the word!

Once filed, please email me with the following information:

  1. Your dietary requirements so that we can prepare you a meal

  2. What bags you have to transport the food in. We have a limited number of Deliveroo insulated food bags that we will be lending out. Please let us know if you have a pannier rack, pannier bags, or can bring a large travel backpack, or even have access to a Deliveroo style big insulated food backpack too. If you borrow one of the Migrateful bags, please could it be dropped back at the venue on the evening, or at the office in Brixton over the following week.

  3. Your contact number and home/end address so that we can create the routes as convenient as possible!

Bringing Brilliance from the Big Blue Building

Tue 30 Mar
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Goodgym Islington was returned to The Elizabeth House Foodbank on an unseasonably sunny Tuesday lunchtime. Our team met with Nathalie, the volunteer coordinator, who had arranged for approximately 30 bags of shopping, essential supplies and donated food for local households and families. Within 40 minutes, we were able to deliver all of these Easter themed gift parcels across the borough.

People Need Parcels

Mon 29 Mar
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

3 Goodgymmers traveled to The Angel Church near Sadler's Wells, to help The People's Army with their foodbank project. We were treated to a beautiful sunny evening- perfect for cycle and walking deliveries across Islington, Archway and Arsenal boroughs. Laura and Tom pedaled up to North London (Tom had just completed his first ultra marathon, so was doing this on tired legs!), and AA Simon walked to a residential home off Cally Road.

Smashing work, guys. We have a great crew signed up for next week- Looking forward to it!

The People's Army: Food parcel/meals deliveries (New 5pm Start)

Mon 29 Mar 16:45 pm
the angel church , 5 chadwell street , islington london, EC1R 1XD
Help them with food and essentials when they cant provide for themselves

A new referral from a super active community project!

We are looking for volunteers to assist with the delivery of food, supplies and essentials for households around the Islington borough.

Typically, our deliveries will be prepared ready-meals in plastic tubs. One trip would require a Goodgymmer to carry 8-16 tubs in one go, dropping off multiple meals to one or two locations.

Foot deliveries or very careful cycle couriering would be best of this task. Shopping bags or Ikea-style luggage bags are perfect of carrying these items.

Location examples:

The Angel Church to Holloway N7 address (2.3 miles)

The Angel Church to Archway N19 address (3.1 miles)

The Angel Church to Barnsbury N7 address (1.4 miles)

Requirements:

  • Participants must be DBS certified for this task.

  • All sign-ups must be listed by 12pm on Friday, to allow for packages to be prepared.

Any inquiries, contact Area Activator Simon Fitzmaurice (listed on page).

The People's Army

An Islington volunteer scheme has supplied more than 10,000 meals to the local community over the coronavirus lockdown, providing around 1,000 meals a week in its peak.
