Stretching out the morning with some yoga

Tue 24 Aug
Report written by Paul Salman

A few people joined for a morning yoga session. Simple mindful yoga to build strength, suppleness and balance.

yoga talk

Yoga has improved my balance and flexibility, reminded me of the importance of play, and made me acutely aware of how little control I have over the contents of my mind. But besides conferring these and other benefits to me, yoga has been a wonderful source of voluntary discomfort.

Come and Guide Run with Achilles International

Thu 29 Jul 18:00 pm
Green Park Underground Station, London, W1J 9DZ
Be a sighted runner and explore the world of guide running!

Achilles International are an amazing organisation who link guide with blind and particially sighted runners, and they are looking for potential guides for future training sessions.

Goodgym (and parkrun) communities have been very supportive of this team over the years, so we are looking to see if we can introduce more runners to the world of guiding.

Green Park Group Runs

Every Thursday at 6pm, a regular crew of guides and blind/partially sighted runners will meet up at Green Park Underground Station (just by the ticket barriers), ready to partake in a 5-8km run around the park. We aim start at 6.15pm, and we operate a bag drop during the session.

How do I get involved?

We are looking for volunteers to come and help our runners from the station, over to our meeting spot near Green Park Fountain, and back again afterwards. TFL staff are on hand to assist with the runners journey to and from Green Park.

We are looking for guides to navigate the runners during the session (paces and distances will be discussed beforehand), and to look out for obstacles and hazards during the run.

Open to runners of all guiding experience

If you are not confident with guiding a runner at first, you are welcome to run with a guiding couple to watch their techniques and how it is done.

What do I do now

If you are interested, sign up here.

We will contact you on Wednesday, and link you to the Achilles International WhatsApp group to discuss our plans for Thursday evening.

Introduce yourself, and let us know your guiding experience, and we will work together to create an awesome group!

Westminster

Westminster is Bestminster

Sun 25 Jul
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

The Goodgym Aid Station 2 team (created as a response to the amazing level of enthusiasm garnered by the Goodgym crew!) assembled outside Westminster bright and early on Sunday morning, ready for a day of race prep and good vibes! Our objective was to lay out hundreds of paper cups in a neat and organised manner before the first runners pass our water station for the ASICS 10km.

All the volunteers (including the lovely team from Fordy Runs group, who were also on hand) got straight to it, and we had towers of cups ready to be distributed in no time! Which was certainly to our advantage, as the first runners were tearing round the course as we worked (first place approached our 9km aid station in about 26 minutes!).

For the rest of the morning, we had a blast cheering on the all of the passing runners, approaching the final stretch of their races. Experienced semi-pro club runners, first timers, charity challengers and plenty of Goodgymmers were out enjoying their first mass participation running fest on London streets for almost a year and a half. The atmosphere was electric.

Thank you to all of the Goodgym team for coming out and supporting grass roots running races, and for encouraging your fellow running folk to achieve their own personal goals. Can't wait to do it again!

Tom Blake has completed 25 good deeds with GoodGym. Thu 22 Jul 2021

Tom has already done 25 good deeds with GoodGym. Instead of doing anything else, they've used their run to go and help people that need their help; digging, lifting, scraping, clearing, planting and weeding. Stuff that makes this a better place to be.

Come Guide With Me

Thu 22 Jul
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

We had a top crew of VI runners and new guides come and join us for the weekly guide running social with Achilles International this week.

Regular guides Area Activator Simon and Caroline were on hand, but we also joined by Katy, Kat, Tom and Suraj for their first experiences of guide running. Our start location in Green Park is generally perfect for safe guiding (no road crossings, and an easily navigated 1 mile loop)- we just needed to be careful about other pedestrians making the most of the sun!

Everyone was able to complete 5km or more over the course of an hour (some guides chose to switch between guiding and navigation duties during the run- we were in the fortunate position where we had more guides than VI runners!). As a post-run treat, we were offered some ice lollies and ice cream to cool off. Andrew, Naqi, Esita and Tom had a great run and we enjoyed a good catch up as the sun went down.

Feel free to sign up here if you would like to join us next week!

GoodGym aid station at Asics London 10K - 2.0

Sun 25 Jul 07:00 am
The Sanctuary, London, SW1P 3JS
Come and volunteer at the race, and get a VIP/Plus Perks Hackney Half place FREE

We're back for a third time this July at the Asics London 10K in Westminster.

We’ll be helping at an aid station on Victoria Street outside Westminster Abbey. The task itself amounts to handing out water to sweltering runners whilst yelling encouragement in their faces - you’ll love it!

Here's a run report from the 2018 event and the 2019 one here to get a sense of what to expect in terms of the task.

So get your red shirt on, and come along and cheer-on the GoodGymmers competing in the race, help increase the visibility of GoodGym at this busy high-profile event, and get a little something for your trouble…

LimeLight Sports offer each GoodGym volunteer:

  • “As a big thank you for volunteering, we’re willing to offer VIP/Plus Perks Hackney Half Tickets. These normally retail at £89 and alongside finisher swag, you get access to posh loos, private bag check, hospitality and race pack postage. As always, these can be gifted to a friend or used yourself!”

  • Breakfast on the day.

  • Loot. Historically there's always been branded merch assigned to volunteers at the start, and finishers shirts floating about at the end. TBC exactly what yet.

Details

Times: 7.00 – 13.00 (although we ordinarily get signed-off rather before this)

Getting there: Waterloo and Victoria mainlines, Westminster and St. James' Park Undergrounds are all nearby. Be aware some buses on the North side of the river will be on diversion because of the race.

If you’re already down to volunteer at Victoria Embankment but you’d prefer this, you’re most welcome to move across.

All you need to do is mail the Staffing and Volunteer Manager there Naomi and let her know. Naomi.Smith@limelightsports.com before midday on Thursday (22nd)
