It's finally here! Time for the Big Weekender and a chance for the Lambeth team to head up and meet our colleagues and fellow do-good-get-fitters in York.

We will be having dinner somewhere @ Spark York (Just like Pop Brixton I'm told!) and perhaps a drink or two as well. https://www.sparkyork.org/

Come and join us if you are anywhere in the vicinity, we'd love to meet as many of the GG community as possible!

Cutting it Vine…!!

Tue 12 Jul
Report written by Yianny
he / him

Tuesday evening and the temperature was in the mid/late 20s so summer is finally here and the Lambeth GoodGym crew were out in good numbers for one of our longer runs.

AA Yianny was so excited by the nice weather he forgot to select a category for the group so went with the first thing in sight - favourite type of tree… Anyway warm up done in short order and we were off for a slow steady climb up Brixton Hill.

In an incredible effort from Tilly who had run a 10k two days before was back out for a casual 6kms recovery run - what a hero! With the York 10k coming up this was a chance for a few of us to also get a bit of training under our belts as we have less than a month to go!

Stop start stop start that’s the way of it heading through Brixton rush hour but soon enough we were climbing towards the junction with Streatham Hill and then left onto Palace Road where the Nature Gardens are.

Gerry was waiting for us and first order of business was who would take the scythe on, for this task there was only one person and that was Joao who looked so comfortable with it we began to question if he wasn’t secretly a character from a 90s slasher movie. Next the group split into pairs and threes to begin trimming back all the weeds and rushes that were growing across the paths and around the pond. This was made more challenging by having fairly blunt shears (or indestructible weeds) but the group still managed to pile up large amounts of the stuff which will be left to dry out and then composted in a few days’ time.

As we were all spread out we couldn’t hear Super Sam’s tunes this week but I have no doubt they were amazing as always.

Swish, sweep, repeat. That was the rythme of the scythe doing it’s work while the nettles went to work all over Joao’s legs and the blunt shear bearers were building forearm strength just opening and closing the shears! In the end it was almost as easy using the rake to drag the weeds up as it was to cut them down.

As we packed up to leave it only remained for Shauna and Maya to take in the cuttings that were in the outside of the park and then we could be off back to base at Papa’s.

A fun and physical task for which Gerry was very grateful and a decent run to boot so all in all a very fit Tuesday - thanks everyone!

Last minute help needed for a local school

Sat 9 Jul

Christchurch school are having a big open day celebration and would love to showcase their amazing secret garden which is used as a learning space for the children to grow their own fruit and veg and learn about nature. However, the garden is getting quite overgrown and they need some help getting it ready. Any time you can spare for this incredible resource would be really appreciated!

The secret garden is a little tricky to find so we will meet at the entrance of the school at 12:30 then walk over together. If you're running late then just message me on 07786231424 and I'll drop a pin. Ana

Chopping back trees at Moorlands Gardens

Sat 9 Jul

We've been asked for some GG muscle to help cut back some trees and bushes at Moorlands Gardens on Saturday morning!

It'll be some fun work with shears and secateurs and there may also be some woodchip to spread on the paths.

Either way it'll take an hour or so.

Please bring gardening gloves

Moorlands is at the end of Eaton Drive, by the car park. You can't miss it.

Report written by Tim Wheatley

A freshly deposited steaming pile of woodchip was waiting for us outside the Remakery. Me, Sarah and Sam helped spread it over vegetable patches, flower beds, mushroom towers and tree plots. After an hour the beautiful community garden was looking very neat and happy.

Helping out at the Remakery Gardens - Woodchip Lift !!

Sat 2 Jul 10:30 am
50 Lilford Road, London, SE5 9HY
Create a beautiful space and support the workshops

The Remakery is remarkable! It is a wonderful space and is a co-operative workshop and hot desk space in South London developing opportunities around the reuse of surplus materials. They also have a lovely garden at the back of the Paulet Estate for residents and locals to enjoy.

A last minute request to shift some woodchip into the garden. You will be looked after by TWO GG Task Force legends Tim and Sarah on the day as well.

Liv & Tim, Strim.

Thu 30 Jun
Report written by Tim Wheatley

With a new extra long extension lead unfurled to full capacity, Me and Liv were able to strim every inch of Mrs Ms overgrown garden. After an hour of serious strimming the garden was transformed, 4 bin bags were filled and we were coved in bits of grass, brambles and bugs. We even had time to do an extra bit of weeding in the front garden on the way out.
