Litter Picking in Haydon Wick!

Tue 12 Oct

We will be running approximately 1km in total to help with a litter picking task in and around Seven Fields Nature Reserve as well as the surrounding streets. We will be meeting with the wonderful Phil Jefferies who likes to keep the area nice and tidy ready for parkrunners on a Saturday morning. Litter picking equipment is being provided by Haydon Wick Parish Council; just don't forget your gloves, hand sanitiser, antibacterial wipes and a face covering should you need one.

It will be getting dark at around 6pm that evening, so please bring a head or body torch if you have one; autumn is officially here!

We will be meeting at 6pm just outside the Customer Service Hub at the Orbital Shopping Park*; just look out for us in the red and black GoodGym tops! After the task, we may be able to fit in a short exercise session before heading back to the Orbital.

Please note: This Group Run is Walkable, meaning that there will be one group of Walkers leaving the Orbital just after 6pm (led by a Task Force Member) and a second group of Runners leaving the Orbital at around 6:10pm (led by a Run Leader). Please also be aware that GoodGym runs are suitable for runners of all abilities. All our runs are backmarked and we never leave anyone behind.

*Please look out for our Run Leader, Simon who will meet you all outside the Customer Service Hub, near the Bus Station, at the Orbital Shopping Park.

Please note that for the time being, our Group Runs will start in various outdoor locations meaning that lockers, toilets and refreshment facilities may not be available before and after the Group Run. We hope that this will change in the future and that at some point soon we can return to a regular meeting point with facilities. For the meantime let's just enjoy meeting up again - we have a lot to catch up on 😊

Tidying up the Woodland Walk at Bridlewood Primary School

Tue 5 Oct

Bridlewood Primary School in North Swindon needs our help again! The weeds have been growing along the Woodland Walk over the summer and our job is to remove them and have a good old tidy up. This will ensure that the children can access the woodland area safely while having lots of fun at school this autumn time.

We started this task in April, returning again in May and July and we anticipate it taking a few more visits until the path is cleared.

Weeding and Planting in the Remembrance Garden at the Prospect Hospice 🪴

Tue 24 Aug

We will be walking and running approximately 7km in total to the Prospect Hospice and back to help with a gardening task in the grounds of the Prospect Hospice in Wroughton. The Remembrance Garden provides a peaceful area for individuals to create a lasting memory for their loved ones. Our job is to tidy it up and tackle the weeds so that it is in good condition for visitors to the Prospect. A very worthwhile job for a charity that has touched all of our hearts in one way or another ❤️

If it’s green, it shouldn’t be seen

Tue 10 Aug
Report written by Sam Coxon

This week we met back at Sainsbury’s for the 18:00 express train. After checking all passengers had valid travel tickets, we were off full steam ahead! This train was heading straight through to Steam Museum. Consisting of two carriages, one running and one walking, today’s train driver Sam opted for a more scenic route but ensured a smooth ride without delays. There was definitely no quiet carriage on this train!

This evening we were back at the Traverser armed and ready to, once again, conquer those persistent pesky weeds. The brief tonight was short and simple, “if it is green then it shouldn’t be seen”. Naturally separating into equal sized groups we each choo choosed a section of the track to conquer. 45 minutes later and all those weeds had been steam rolled, doomed to the confines of a black bin liner. We then finished the task with a nice group photo stood on the Traverser with the warm evening summer sunshine setting behind us.

After a quick tidying up, it was all aboard for the return leg, arriving safely into this week’s temporary station on time. Next week, we’ll be meeting Mike who will lead us to the other side of the railway line for a much needed tidy up ahead of the Heritage Open Days! If you can lend a hand, please sign up here.

GoodGym x I am Team GB: Clearing the Traverser at STEAM!

Tue 10 Aug 18:00 pm
Sainsbury's Bridgemead, Paddington Drive, Swindon, SN5 7AA
To improve the outdoor environment at STEAM, Museum of the Great Western Railway

We will be running approximately 4km in total; to Swindon's Steam Museum and back, to help with some clearing, weeding and litter picking in the traverser. Steam, Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a restored grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon Railway Works. The traverser, situated outside the museum, has become untidy and in need of our help to tidy up this historical part of Swindon. The last time we visited STEAM we didn't quite finish off the weeding so next week gives us the opportunity to pull together and get the job DONE!

We will be meeting at 6pm just outside Sainsbury's Bridgemead*; just look out for us in the red and black GoodGym tops! After the task, we may be able to fit in a short exercise session before heading back to Sainsbury's.

Please note: This Group Run is Walkable, meaning that there will be one group of Walkers leaving Sainsbury's just after 6pm (led by a Task Force Member) and a second group of Runners leaving Sainsbury's at around 6:10pm (led by a Run Leader). Please also be aware that GoodGym runs are suitable for runners of all abilities. All our runs are backmarked and we never leave anyone behind.

*Please look out for our Run Leader, Sam who will meet you all at Sainsbury's, to the far right hand side of the building (go past the front entrance, Timpsons and the exit doors and Sam will meet you at the end of that path).
