A cracking task and a bit of eggs-ercise is hard to beat!

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

With Easter just around the corner, we enjoyed an egg-themed session in Wandsworth last night!

After warming up our muscles ahead of the run down to Doddington Community garden, we also warmed up the old grey matter by naming as many egg based recipes as we could. Ranging from basic fried eggs up to frittata, eggs royale, and even Easter Bunny eggs, we proved we had some egg-shell-ent knowledge. OK, that's quite enough bad egg puns from me.

It was just a short run down to where we were meeting Malissa, the lead volunteer, and we loaded ourselves up with pots, plants and compost to take to the garden. We spent the rest of the journey planning for one of GoodGym's most epic challenges yet, whilst doing some calculations on how long it would take for us to carry several hundred bags of compost up to the garden. Watch this space for one of our biggest tasks yet, coming soon!

Up on the rooftop we got cracking (sorry) with various jobs. Whilst Jordan hosed the plants, Catherine and Lorna began tackling the sticky willy (genuine name, promise!) and Annabel, Sophie and Rebecca shifted barrows of compost to the beds. There was just time for a dock plant elimination session before we headed down stairs for our Rabbit Relay.

The aim of the game was to complete three laps each of the square whilst your partner did various strength exercises. You all did incredibly well, especially Catherine who had raced 10k the day before, Jordan who had already done one session that day, and Sophie who ran a very long way yesterday. Whilst the pairing of Jordan and Sophie did technically cross the line first, you are all Rabbit relay champions.

A quick run back to base and some stretches and it was time for our Easter social, much discussion on how to correctly pronounce 'pho' and a lot of laughs. Happy Easter one and all, hope you have an eggstra special break!

The case of the disappearing chicken coop- we performed an eggsorcism!

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

We were a small but perfectly formed group last night as we welcomed Nia to her very first GoodGym run (give her a cheer!) , and got ready to head down to Sacred Heart school for our second visit.

Before we could set off we did our usual warm up and I gave the group a challenge (which I immediately failed...thanks Gemma for helping me out!). Can you name a country that begins with the same letter as the first letter of your name? Everybody nailed it with places including Angola, Lithuania and Germany. Anyone else for a holiday?!

After a brief run down to the school and being carefully checked out by the most enormous cat, we arrived at the school to finish off the task we started last week. We had already got rid of most of the chicken coop, and the efforts of some parents over the weekend had also cleared some more of the area, so this week was all about taking down the last coop and wire and giving it all a good dig over.

The coop did take a bit of careful handling but with a bit of muscle we were able to lift it over the fence ready for collection - look out for it at the Waste Not Want Not charity near Clapham Junction where I understand it is going to be converted into a planter!

After some elbow grease with the spades, forks and rakes the area was looking a lot clearer, all ready to be turned into an amazing sounding meteorological station for the kids. Thanks for coming in on your hols to supervise Headteacher Jared!

We then nipped round the corner to find a space for our fitness session, and set about knocking out a whole body workout which featured planks, burpees, and squats - all the good stuff! Great work everyone.

Next week we have a double whammy of our group run to a local community garden followed by our Easter social. We also have a lunchtime mission on Friday helping out at a homeless shelter. Happy running all!

All cooped up

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

We were full of the joys of Spring last night in Wandsworth. Not only did we have a brand new task for our session, but we also got to welcome Rebecca to her very first GoodGym run! Plus it was still light, there was blossom in the air and loads of fun events to look forward to so we had lots of reasons to celebrate!

After a quick warm up anda round of the London Bridge challenge where we tried to name all of the foot bridges crossing the Thames, we set off for Sacred Heart school for one huge task.

We soon arrived to meet Jared, the headteacher, who gave us our instructions. It quickly became clear that this was going to be no mean feat. But were we chicken? Were we cluck! The job was to clear an area at the school that had been used for keep chickens and pigs and then to give it a dig over. We had plenty of tools at our disposal, and even more energy, so we got cracking.

While some of us took down the fence and clipped wire, others began the digging (even some of the forks were no match for our muscle power!), and dismantling the huge chicken coop. Meanwhile Annabel and Adam began an epic battle of Human V Pig Pen. Several techniques were used to defeat the beast, including crow barring, ripping off pieces with bare hands, sawing, and a lying-down-kicking manoeuvre. With the clock ticking down, we were into the final few minutes before victory was achieved and pen was defeated. Amazing job. With everybody working super hard last night, the result is some pretty brilliant before and after shots - check out the photos! Next week we'll be back to finish off the job.

With all that effort and hardwork, we didn't have time for our usual fitness session, so we'll save that fun for next week. There's plenty to get involved in, with a lunchtime mission on Friday at a local homeless centre, plus our upcoming Easter social. You can also sign up for next week's run here. Have a happy week GoodGym!
