For the record, we're dead good at clearing spaces

Sat 6 Mar
Report written by Phill Stone

Eight chirpy volunteers met at the top of the steps on Saturday to find that some local trees had moved into the space we cleared. This is a tremendous milestone for the project, and the NSI are very pleased with GoodGym’s contribution.

With room to play, we focused our efforts on some of the deep litter pockets that are now accessible. A cache of naughties pop CD’s was discovered, and whilst The Calling or Pink's time in the limelight might be over , we don't think they deserve the bramble bush as a final place to rest. Off to the tip!

The most interesting find was a bizarre animal skull. Donning on our zooarchaeology hats, we concluded we had no idea what it was and maybe stick to bramble slashing. Photos were sent off to the lab for further investigation and I would hedge a bet the cause of death was listening to the rest of The Calling's album.

Between the speedy sything, legendary litter pickeing and laudable loppering, we made another large dent in the overgrowth, and the space is looking nicer and nicer each time we visit. Thanks for coming along everyone, great effort as always! :)

We will be socially distancing during this task and outside at all times. Not sure yet sure if toilets will be available so spend a penny before you arrive.

Tidying up Northern Slopes

Sat 6 Mar 10:00 am
Novers Steps, Northern Slopes, Bristol, BS3 5LN
Improve a local green space

Come and join us at Northern Slopes to make the area look more tidy by addressing the regrown, defining the paths, clearing space for more trees as well as some litter-picking in the area.

We will be meeting at the top of Novers Steps. Look up manage.stones.burst on what3words.com to see the exact location.

Please bring your own gloves. Tools will be provided. As some parts of this task involve thick bramble bushes, please consider adequate clothing.

This task is currently going ahead but may still be cancelled due to the current lockdown situation in which case I will update anyone who has signed up via email. Let's hope that won't be necessary though!

Having a wheel of a time

Sat 23 Jan
Report written by Shreena Parmar

It was a lovely sunny Saturday and we followed in the footsteps of the first group who set the standard high for the task after doing such a great job at the first session that morning.

We were filling buckets of compost and transporting them over to the roof hut where the roofers were fixing the turf roof.

5 GoodGymmers were on wheelbarrow duty (which involved re-filling and lifting buckets), 2 GoodGymmers were refilling buckets with compost, 1 GoodGymmer (Nathalie) was on the platform passing the buckets to the roofers

Great job everyone! Hope you had some fun in the snow the next day :)

Soil shifting and lifting to build a roof at Urban Escape - part 2

Sat 23 Jan 11:45 am
Springfield Allotments , Andover Road, Bristol , BS4 1DG
Helping with building a roof

We will be helping Urban Escape Youth Moves with shifting and lifting building materials to replace the living roof on top of one of the roundhouse. We will be giving the roofer (who is overseeing the build) a hand which should be a exciting and reward task for a Saturday morning. Please bring your own gloves and a face mask (just in case).

We'll be kept warm with the work, but there’s also shelter in the roundhouse (bring a mask) if the weather lets us down.

There're two time slots, 10.30 am and 11.45 am, so please sign up for the one that suits best and both if there aren't takers for the other one.

Remember to strava your journey to the allotments for our January challenge! The gate's on Andover Road at focus.clues.pens, ignore google maps' Daventry Road suggestion.

Escaping the urban grind - final path clearance, again!

Wed 28 Oct 18:00 pm
Springfield Allotments , Andover Road, Bristol , BS4 1DG
Tidier allotment and youth space

We’ll be back at Urban Escape for our Wednesday session, probably less harvesting but still some planting and weeding, definitely some chatting and putting the world to rights!

Please bring a mask if you want to be able to go into the roundhouse for a drink/shelter, and a head torch as it’s now getting dark before we start. A few of us will be there from 5.

The entrance to the allotments is through a pair of green gates on Andover Road (ignore Google’s direction), here.
