It was great to get the opportunity to support the Social supermarket when it is open. Due to the building being used as a polling station, it was open on a Tuesday instead.
Having been shown the ropes by Richard, I was able to take customers around the supermarket. Laura and Graeme were already very experienced at this.
Many customers left very happy as there was a surplus of fruit today.
This Saturday, Coventry goodgym once again paid a visit to Springboard’s Lakeview allotment site. We managed to dodge the showers and dark clouds and complete lots of tasks.
Hedges were tidied up, strawberries saved and moved out of a bed, an area of land was cleared for a new water store and tasks in the potting shed were completed.
It was a lovely afternoon, filled with fun, chatter and activity. It’s a pleasure to spend an afternoon in such a city oasis; filled with nature and friends.
We will be back again next month to continue supporting the allotment.
The Social Supermarket have asked for help with a stocktake as they organise donations ready for sharing with those in need through the Social Supermarket in the Foleshill Community Centre. Please note the slightly earlier start.
The Social Supermarket have asked for help as they will be being used as a polling station on Thursday. This means they will be opening on Tuesday for shopping instead in the Foleshill Community Centre. Please note the earlier start.
After the Supermarket is closed, they have asked for help rearranging the supermarket so there is space for the voting booths. It would be great if you can stay on to help with this too. I have listed it as an extra CM. You don't need to sign up for both.
Team Springboard offer training, work experience and volunteering opportunities in practical horticulture. They believe that working outside in a natural environment helps to reduce social isolation and improves wellbeing. It also provides the opportunity to learn new skills.
We have visited their allotment before and will be supporting the team with their plans to move areas around, gravity fed irrigation, raspberries, planting asparagus etc.
Please ensure you have gloves with you.
Goodgym sprung into action with a return to the Springboard community allotment where there is always plenty to do.
Jackie, Graeme and Vickie set to work on a gigantic raised bed. Meanwhile Laura and Lil cleared some old beds of weeds and covered the soil in straw. Esther, as usual, shared her expertise and knowledge with the goodgym team. This week, we found out all about asparagus. The team got lots done and rain managed to hold off for the duration.
5 GoodGym runners braved the April blizzards to support the Scouts to get their allotment ready for re-opening in a few weeks.
Our tasks for the evening included filling the new raised beds with compost so that they are ready for planting, moving manure and laying wood chippings on the paths. Shovelling, raking and using the wheelbarrow certainly kept us warm!
No we are quite used to counting stock, it was great to get going on the task. Our mental maths skills were tested and over 1000 tins of soup were counted alongside the other staples stocked on the shelves in the cold room, in the pantries and in the supermarket itself.
There were some Easter egg and Stoke donations delivered too from the GoodGym Coventry members.
