GoodGym Kingston to the plant rescue

Sun 14 Aug
Report written by Jane Yelloly

A scorcher!

Goodgym Kingston did its first mission with new partner New Malden Town Centre Partnership with organiser Danielle.

The mission was to give Jubilee Gardens planters an extra dose of water and mulch to help save the plants from drought conditions despite ongoing watering on alternate days.

We gave all the roots a good water and mulched a couple of the large beds with the temperatures getting furnace like by 10 am. The local community volunteers will then be back to continue mulching next week and GoodGym will return in a couple of weeks.

We pray these plants will bounce back next year and look like they did in Spring.

Square Care - giving a bit of TLC to Jubilee Square

Sun 14 Aug 09:00 am
Jubilee Square, Cocks Crescent, New Malden, KT3 4TA
Making the space more attractive

New Malden’s latest public space, to be known as Jubilee Square forms part of Kingston Council’s heritage-led regeneration of the borough, and will celebrate New Malden’s rich history and culture through projects such as local history boards and community art work.

The planters in the square need maintaining though - and they need GoodGym's help to water and weed the bedding plants and planters - there's lots to do. Having beds full of flowers and healthy plants will lift the spirits of local people and improve the area for biodiversity.

Gloves will need to be worn, green waste will be left in a pile to naturally decompose near the oak tree, litter collected can go in the bins provided on site. We can provide drinks and tools.

Risks
This is a public space so it is possible that occasionally the litter may include glass, some of the plants have spikes eg brambles, so sturdy gloves are sometimes required, the planter beds are raised 0.5m high, so people need to take care getting in and out of them.

The task owner is Danielle and her number is 07402484845.
