Clear space for bums on seats

Tue 20 Apr
Report written by Alan Cunningham

Great turnout and after an hour or so of hacking, raking and slashing we even discovered some benches. Among the weeds on the raised beds were revealed two dozen empty beer bottles, a case of two of sundry cans and the usual quota of crisp packets. But disappointingly, only one weapon; a short handled, fixed blade knife. Andrew, our mentor for the evening's mission was unimpressed, having unearthed a number of knives, a gun and a samurai sword while on various clear ups in Southwark. This evening there was a rumour of some support coming from our site's adjoining corporate neighbour, Unilever. But sadly the half expected box of 'Magnum' ice creams failed to materialize....! Never mind. We all felt that a positive difference had been made and the gentlefolk of Kingston now have a highly desirable seating area on the sunny banks of the Hogsmill.

Bloomin' Marvellous task working the Rose Garden project

Tue 1 Jun 18:30 pm
Fishponds Park , Off Mayberry Place, , Surbiton, , KT5 8SY
Improve the ambience and biodiversity of wildlife in our community

No pardon here as this is what we asked for...A project to work on throughout the year in Kingston.... and we got it!! So gloves on and have at it!

The rose beds at the top of Fishponds Park is the venue and as discussed with I.D Verde we are adopting them, so taking on various aspects of their maintenance through the horticultural year.

So, first Tuesday of every month, this is the place to be https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/51%C2%B023'17.2%22N+0%C2%B017'37.1%22W/@51.3881111,-0.2947332,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d51.3881197!4d-0.2936432?hl=en

Andrew is our friendly task owner for this one and should you need him on route then number that is best is 07890 999 314

Andrew has also been kind enough to share a breakdown of the plan for the area with me so let me know if you wish to know more and I can email you some details!!

....Voices of Hope is a local charity dedicated to community activities, designed to enhance physical and mental wellbeing. Together with the Council, Council contractor Idverde and the Friends of Fishponds Park, we have come up with an exciting plan to reinvigorate a corner of Fishponds Park, Surbiton. This will create a community food growing space, transform a redundant flower bed into a sensory garden and save an existing rose garden. The community allotment will include accessible footpaths for the mobility impaired, as well as a host of green infrastructure features and pollinator-friendly planting to improve biodiversity. Access to grant funding will be required to make all this possible and there is a lot of work to be done before it can be a reality. Once established, the vision includes involving various groups in maintaining and developing the area, with the possibility of using the food for community lunches and even supplying the local food bank. This project will complement the adjacent community orchard that was planted in January 2020 and create an attractive feature with fantastic potential for community use.

Weed clear for a Seat

Tue 20 Apr 18:30 pm
St James's Rd, Kingston upon Thames , KT1 2BA
Help clear the space from vegetation to reveal a seated area in our community

Ready for a little clearance work in a seating area just off Wheatfield Way on the one way system?

It's a project Good Gym tackled once before and we removed huge volumes of litter from a fairly Jurassic looking part of Kingston to reveal a perfect little spot to rest and watch the world go by.

The litter isn't too bad this time, but could do with some vegetation trimming back.

It's our Good friend Andrew from I.D Verde who has volunteered to help and asked if we could assist him so just bring your gloves as he will have all the tools etc.

His number if you need him on route is (0) 7890 999 314

The location is Wheatfield Way (Just next to the roundabout by Kingston College and very close to the Guildhall). Location marker is here: https://goo.gl/maps/7oQq33CdeUjMCS8u5

Nearest postcode would be KT1 2BA we think. It is tucked away but if you follow the location marker map you will see it is on the roundabout almost. You will find a little entrance in amongst the hedge. Opposite side to the college. Unilever building is right next to the plot!

Cutting down Allotment Waiting List

Tue 6 Apr
Report written by Petra Stockelmayerova

Despite earlier snow and ever present cold, we braved the elements and gathered at the Tolworth allotment where we were met by the lovely Georgia.

Firstly, we were given a tour of the wonderful community "house/office" where a bug hotel was to be constructed (drawings looked good), brackets printed by a very fancy 3D printer and plants & fish looked after. Nice and cozy inside but that's not why we were there.

There were number of plots that were left full of unwanted items, some trapped by the ever present bramble. Taking on the bramble first (there seem to be no gloves in the world to protect you from this nemesis), we were then able to clear that plot as well as few others, bagging most of the items for disposal and making a bonfire pile from the unwanted wood. With a little more work from Georgia's team (mainly collection of the old broken greenhouse), these plots can be used for a community plot as well as go to local people, some of whom have been on a waiting list for 3-4 years we have been told.

Looking forward to coming back soon.

PS: apologies to Jacquetta for losing her hat

Helping to clear this allotment plot will make it usable to locals who may wish to grow fruit and veg for themselves and their family.

Helping the Farm of Futures team to clear a disused allotment plot which currently has old wood, rubbish and general waste on it.

Although there are pathways through the plot, long leggings may also be a good idea 😀

Georgia from The Community Brain will meet you at the entrance to Tolworth Main Allotments to direct you to the plot. You should bring your own gloves as we will be bagging up rubbish and handling old wood which may have splinters. We will provide bin bags and litter pickers

Peachy keen for slow worm superhighways

Thu 6 Aug
Report written by Jane Yelloly

We were 5 runners and riders plus Brian and Ben from the Edible Forest.

Well done to Jacquetta on her 2nd mission with GoodGym and managing to cut down an entire dead tree which was blocking the light to the baby apples trees in the forest. And great to welcome back some old faces to the Forest - Luke, Rob and Kate.

After an essential plum tasting session to get our blood sugars up for forest work, the Famous Five almost became foresters and:

  • continued cutting down invasive perimeter trees started on the last session to let sunlight into the forest

  • several of us had our first go at drafting apple trees - pretty much breeding apple trees and as good as making a new GoodGym breed of apple!

  • making a slowworm SUPERhighway. Yes! A highway for useful slowworms to flourish and eat all the slugs in the veg patch

  • shook and shaked some apple trees to collect the fruit

  • watered some very thirsty trees

And we will all enjoy our fruity pickings from the session - plums, blackberries and apples.

A big thank you to Brian and Ben!

Helping at Edible Forest

Thu 6 Aug 18:00 pm
Knollmead Allotments , Tolworth, KT5 9QP
Help with the upkeep for a local forest that produces so much in our community

Edible Forest have loved our visits and so to have those that made the journey from GG to help keep on top of all the things happening there.

So much so that repeat visits are now in place to help stay on top of the work that needs doing to help the forest thrive!

Not sure if any plums will be left after the last visit but yet to know of a time we left without some fresh fruit in our pockets!!
