Clear it, Pick it, Barrow it, Shovel it. Harder Better Faster Stronger!

Mon 24 Feb
Report written by Sam Needham

First of all, we welcomed newcomer David, and then...

Congratulated Chris on reaching his 50th good deed. He's been coming to GoodGym whenever he can for about 2 years, and as he says, "It's not about getting the T-shirts!" ...and he's quite right. Helping the community, along with the social aspect of enjoying like minded people's company is definitely where it's at!

A group run led by me wouldn't be complete without sprints, intervals & hill reps - and that's just what we did to and from the task - turning it into a decent session in the process.

We met Magnificent Martin from Regather at Lynwood Gardens, whereupon we divided into groups and set about spreading mulch on the squelchy paths, clearing ivy from around an area of willow tree saplings & litter picking the area.

We then headed back to base via hill reps & a long sprint up The Moor.

Happy running!

Lynwood Gardens

Showroom Cinema , 15 Paternoster Row, Sheffield, S1 2BX
Maintaining this fantastic city based pocket forest for all to use and enjoy

Lynwood Gardens is a 'pocket forest' of mature woodland and glades situated in Broomhall virtually untouched for over 150 years. The site is located behind the Francis Newton pub and dates back to the 1820s as a rare example of the surviving house and garden of the wealthy Victorian cutlery manufacturer Francis Newton.

Lynwood Gardens is home to Sheffield Woodland Kindergarten, Sheffield’s only fully outdoor childcare provision.

Throughout the year we will helping the Friends of Lynwood Gardens and Sheffield Woodland Kindergarten to maintain and improve Lynwood Gardens.

This will involve mulching paths, removing weeds, lifting and tidying, digging, raking and pruning.

If you have gardening gloves and a head torch please bring them. Thanks!

See you in the Forest!

Red Thunder Goes Green for Heeley Green Veg

Mon 17 Feb
Report written by Tom Mutton

It was a night of celebration with 2 fantastic runners reaching GG Milestones. A HUGE congrats to;

AMAZING ANNIE for reaching 50 good deeds!

SENSATIONAL CELINE for reaching 100 good deeds!

We also welcomed 2 new GG runners, please click on their names below to support and cheer them!

Eve

Chloe

We timed our departure to perfection, avoiding the rain and headed off to Hilly Heeley to meet with Heeley Green Veg; a community of neighbors looking to take stewardship of a local patch of land to teach the local community about growing fruit and veg and bring the community together to encourage socialising and reduce isolation.

With limited tools we split into 2 groups with half on the task of weeding and soil moving and half with me taking on some hill reps. We did 3 hill reps in total at 70% effort and recovered on the way back. On the final set we stopped at the top of the hill and also used a stair set to get some fast feet practice in.

After kicking of the clay mud and hearing some heartfelt thanks from the Heeley Green Veg massive we headed back for home with some loop backs and optional extensions thrown in, stretched off, heard the latest news and upcoming events and headed in for a fantastic tray bake provide by Caroline. Thanks Caroline!

Until next week, happy running! :)

Regather

Helping this fantastic community gem of an organisation

Regather are long standing friends of Good Gym in Sheffield and are involved in a huge variety of projects across the city.

From running a local fruit and veg box scheme, to managing events such as the Folk Forest, to hosting many co-operative events and start up schemes such as cooking projects, brewing, comedy, music and film they are a fantastic co-op that do a huge amount of work that brings the local community together and benefits all. They are a not for profit and their profits go back into the co-op to continue and expand the projects they are working on.

We help Regather out with many projects from helping with labelling of apple and cider bottles made from local apples that would otherwise go to waste, to helping manage the grounds outside the co-op and across other sites they are involved with such as Lynwood Gardens; a 'pocket forest' of mature woodland and glades situated in Broomhall virtually untouched for over 150 years!

Be prepared to get involved with all sorts from inside, to outside. If you have a pair of gardening gloves with you please do bring them along.

If dark, please bring a head torch.

Reddy, Set, GoodGym!

Mon 10 Feb
Report written by Tom Mutton

On a stormy Sheffield eve we welcomed a new runner in from the cold. A huge, warm welcome to

Ines

Support and cheer Ines by clicking on her name above. Welcome to the team Ines, great to have you!

Last night we headed off in the blustery wind in the direction of Heeley to help BRILLIANT BEV & RELIABLE ROB of Heeley Development Trust with the upkeep of Heeley People's Park.

We even had snow on the way, but we kept storm Ciara at bay and didn't let the weather get in our way.

On arrival we were welcomed by Rob and Bev who gave us a brief of the evenings tasks which involved moving their very own woodchip (created using the parks own trees) to areas of the park that were in need of some fresh hot chip...

Bev was very excited to show us their new set of GoodGym red buckets that we would be christening (get the pun title now?).

Having done a few woodchipping tasks in the past we were all chips off the old block and mulch fun was had moving the woodchip to the areas in need.

Once the path was covered and raked to perfection, a boulder approach was taken to woodchip spreading as we moved onto the climbing boulder area to ensure soft landings would be in store for any climbers.

Everyone got really stuck in with an efficient assembly line of fillers, luggers and rakers making most efficient use of our time at the park, lovely to see.

You can't make a woodchip omlette without raking some beds - Kat Simmons

Once it got to our time to leave we received a lovely heart felt thanks from Bev and Rob and we headed off to the U Mix center to use the 50m sprint track to get some sprint sets in before heading back to base to stretch and hear what other fantastic gg activities were upcoming.

Until next time, happy running :)
